He watches his partners entire body shutter as it breathes, its back hitting the wall on the exhale in what Ourson think might be exhaustion. Whatever counts for exhaustion in something like Antoine.

He doesn’t quite know why Antoine insists on the facade of humanity when he isn’t even good at it. Ourson had even told him once when he’s walked into the mens bathroom to find his partner hunched over the sink staring into the wall spanning mirror. It was hard to see in the dark, at first he had worried it was plucking out its own eye, then as he got closer there was a wet sound, then porcelain clattering as something hard fell into the sink, then another. Ourson couldn’t make it out at first, the sink was the same shade.

Antoine had all but jump on him, its hands on his face and jaw, working his muzzle open. Its finger poked at his canines and drew blood. “I thought so,” Antoine said, “I made too many.”
