Can I be mean about a trope with disability representation that's getting really grating?
I'm so sick of disability representation (in sci fi and fantasy especially) routinely being masked in metaphors and/or more of an aesthetic a character has instead of like. Just a real fucking disability. I'm sick of characters losing a limb and it's immediately replaced with a robot limb that functions perfectly as a normal arm and that's that and they function the same as before. I'm so sick of characters being unable to do magic and being treated as lesser by their peers as a metaphor for being disabled when they could just have a real disability. I'm sick of being shown aliens and robots who are supposed to be blind or deaf or mute but are given a secret sixth alien/robot sense that means actually them being blind or deaf or mute doesn't affect their ability to function or communicate at all. I'm sick of metaphors that aren't necessary because they're not enhancing a message about being disabled, they're just to justify a non-disabled character representing disabled people. I'm sick of characters having the aesthetics of being disabled for shock value, but they're written to function exactly the same as a non-disabled character. I'm tired of a large portion of the SCRAPS of disabled representation we get being this ridiculous bullshit where they're not even actually disabled and being told I have to like it when it's not even good. Like oh my god oh my god bare minimum just show me a character with chronic pain who takes medication for it that would literally be enough for me to be like "omg a disabled character who's disabled just like me for real :)!!" but most mainstream attempts to represent disabled people can't even put THAT much consideration and effort into it lol.
I can tell some people are just throwing the word "community" around and are completely unwilling to have serious discussions about tangible harm to their community because having a free pass to be mean and judgemental in public is more important to them than if other people live or die. Your priorities are unethical as FUCK!!!
If I'm being totally honest about my attitude about being an artist. I'd rather make a bunch of ugly looking, overdone, not at all groundbreaking or even very good bullshit than make nothing at all. One, seemingly mundane and simple stick figure doodle is still a new creation that didn't exist before made only the way you could've done it. Isn't that wonderful?

Happy disability pride month to folks with DID, OSDD, schizophrenia spectrum disorders, folks who have intense delusions, hallucinations, and any mentally ill people with "weird" symptoms that people have this really uncomfortable morbid curiosity towards. It's really fucked up that we're still constantly subjected to offensive caricatures of ourselves made by people who don't have our experiences while being treated like we're too sick and stupid to tell our own stories. It's really fucked up that we're constantly demonized and treated as innately dangerous when we're WAY more likely to be victims of violence than perpetrators. It's really fucked up that we're constantly denied autonomy in our own care and treated like we can't possibly actually know anything about the disorders we have and that our voices about our own experiences are treated as unreliable. It's really fucked up that we get treated like the circus freaks of the mentally ill community, even often by the other people in it. It's really fucked up that we're treated especially like shit in other marginalized communities we're a part of because of these very demonized and stigmatized disorders. We deserve better.
I think it's really funny how a lot of the one off art pieces I make of my own OCs doesn't really align with what they're like in the story I wrote for them or what that story is about. Like Doctor isn't mega evil but he's also (at least for most of his story) not a great person either. The whole thing I wrote for him (which I might flesh out into a comic someday) is that he's kind of a misanthropic, callous asshole who was sent to earth for a few thousand years because while he's very good at magic, his elders feared he had no real appreciation for the universe and everything in it and only placed worth on things based on how powerful they were (they assessed his issues correctly). So he got sent on a mandatory study tour to Earth with his powers limited and moped around in solitude for most of it. And then the actual plot takes place over the last ten years of his time on Earth where he actually tries to interact with people and starts to learn things and grow as a person. The story is about how no amount of talent or wealth or privilege makes up for viewing the world and other people as beneath you and about how much it can actually blind you to how complicated and hard reality is and you really have to step out of your own world to learn some of the hardest and most worthwhile lessons. He ends the story as a much better person and falls in love with another weird immortal guy. But for most of the story he's really fucking annoying and shitty and pathetic lol.
