- it's just a dance, an assignment to everybody else, but to bachira it was an opportunity!

- nagi slept through the entire debrief of the assignment

- he heard bits of it while coming in and out of sleep, something about.. dancing, partners, uhh.. worth more than half of your grade

- the usual stuff, he should be able to get it done, he'll just pair up with you– they mentioned partners right?

- he also naps through the calling of partnered names (😭😭)

- when he FINALLY does wake up though, that's when the jealousy and maybe panic begin to settle

- the first thing he does is walk up to you, tug on your sleeve and ask about the assignment "oh! sei we aren't partnered together, you're with uhm.. i think that girl?"

- he looks at you like you just told him the sun was a social construct

- he doesn't reply to that, quiet and confused before pulling out his phone to play another dumb game

- no "okay" or "what?" just... whatever the hell that was

- next morning he rolls into class with a wheelchair and a cast, he tells the teacher "he can't possibly dance like this" as if they would even think to protest against this??😭

- who you don't trust is the absolute SNAKE that he's paired up with in this now stupid dance.

- you don't tell this to him until way after the entire hype of the assignment fades away and your grades are already finalized

- "okay so you know that girl you were paired up with, ren.. she like used to be a part of our friend group that fell apart and you wanna know why it broke apart, because of HER! so basically what happened.."

- he just nods while you gossip away like he always does

- if he's jealous he sure as hell doesn't give it away, at all.

- a blank slate, that's all he is in that exact moment, even when dancing with some other girl he didn't bother acknowledging, there's nothing

- what you ended up missing, is that his jealousy is as calculated like every move he makes on the field

- his glares are intentional, timed perfectly at every turn and spin to be aimed directly at the guy you were dancing with

- then, when you were the one in sight he'd tone his look down, keeping his face unreadable before slipping back into that deadpan when it's the guy again

- he plays it cool, doesn't bring it up in conversations after that class, or anywhere else

- as if it never even occured at all!

- the one time he lets his control slip is when he makes a passing comment on how your partner had "sloppy moves" and called him mumble from happy feet 😭?

- i like to believe sae somehow has it in him to dance the tango despite all his knowledge allocated to football

- "dancing is a sport, what're you so surprised for?" is all he replies back when he says this project wouldn't be much of a problem at all

- in this case you're the one jealous here, because not only is your partner shit at dancing, but sae is across the room twirling around with some other girl effortlessly.

- your bitterness gets to the best of you and you act on the impulse to trip your partner so you wouldn't have to dance with someone so god damn clumsy

- now here you are, sulking in your bedroom with sae beside you on the bed, a deadpanned gaze overlooking your faux distress

- "this.. this is.. HORRIBLE! oh.. the horrors of this horrifying horror..." you cried out

"did you just use horror 3 times??"

- sae quickly figures out you're jealous and doesn't hesitate, guiding your hips towards him with a quick motion of his hands "i'll teach you then, since you haven't got a partner."

- all is well when you end up learning how to slow dance with sae in your bedroom, even if you accidentally bumped back onto your nightstand one too many times

- acts totally unbothered when you both are partnered with other people

- hates it after 1 second of dancing

- ?? shidou, THE ryusei shidou, the crazy guy on campus with crazy good looks and crazy amazing skills in football?? is being partnered with some other who can't even keep up??

- texts you "get me tf outta here😭😭" when you're absent and sends you a video of his partner doing some embarrassing shit "RYU YOU CANT JUST VIDEO PEOPLE???"

- gets a barely passing score because thankfully your teacher is not as mean as he is

- continues to joke about the girl he was made to dance with for years to come "that reminds me of that one..."

- "SHUT UP??" you interrupt before he can even finish, already knowing what insult he's ready to shout out

- he knew he was doomed the moment he found himself partnered with another

- given his history, and the fact that you know about it yourself, he'd NEVER– and i mean never hear the end of it from you

- he's not jealous and neither are you really, but you are nothing if not petty!

- you joke about it at every given opportunity "she take up your schedule again?" if he's late by a SECOND to one date "must've been meant for her huh" when he sends you a message meant for karasu😭

- even if he apologizes, claims that he's about as interested with her as he is with his aunt, you NEVER let up. he never hears the end of it, and he doesn't think he ever will in his.. 80 more years of living! woohoo!! i guess..

The day feels off before you even see him step into your family's flower shop. You'd already gotten the feeling, after you woke up, that something would happen today. And then, because the universe loves messing with you, the bell above your door rings and an annoyingly familiar white and green-haired man walks in, and you suddenly realize why you'd gotten that feeling about today.

He doesn't notice you at first; he's too busy looking through the selections of bouquets and individual flowers that you've grown and put together by hand. But why is he here? Is he buying flowers for someone? A new partner?

The thought shouldn't bother you as much as it does. You and Otoya broke up eight months ago, after you'd found what seemed like irrefutable evidence that he was cheating on you. You told yourself you should've known better, considering his reputation. But, three months after you broke up, Karasu reached out to you and cleared everything up: it was an old photo from ages ago, and Otoya hadn't actually cheated on you. After that, you were too humiliated to ask him for forgiveness, so the two of you haven't talked since.

And now here he is, in your flower shop, buying flowers for someone else.

He picks out a bouquet of white roses, lilies, and orchids, wrapped in pale blue paper and tied with a white ribbon. Your trademark apology bouquet. Your immediate thought is that he must've fucked things up in his new relationship, but a sense of guilt washes over you at your assumption. He wasn't that terrible when you two were together.

He sets the bouquet down on the counter in front of you to pay, and as he looks up, his eyes finally widen in recognition. "Hey," he mumbles, and you see his cheeks dust red with a faint blush.

"Hi," you reply, checking the flowers as fast as you can. "Five hundred yen," you tell him, holding out your hand for the change, the bouquet in your other to give back to him.

He hands you the coin, but doesn't take the bouquet back. You glance up and see that he's still staring at you. "Keep it," he says. "T-the bouquet. It's for you anyways."

You blink in surprise, but before you can respond, he's already speed-walking to the door. So is he still single, if he's giving you flowers? Or are you reading into this too much? And why the hell did he just buy you your own flowers?

But the next day, Otoya is back. And the next. And the next. For almost two weeks. Not to buy flowers; he's pretending to look at the displays, and doing a very poor job of it. Every few seconds, you notice him glance your way.

"What do you want?" you ask, finally getting tired of the awkward silence.

"I'm sorry," he says. "I'm really sorry."

"You didn't do anything wrong," you mutter, finally deciding to confront your guilt. "Karasu told me everything. You didn't cheat on me. But I was too embarrassed to go and apologize to you."

"It's not your fault either," he insists. "You weren't wrong to leave when you thought I was cheating. And I didn't even bother to try to explain it to you or defend myself." He pauses and takes a deep breath. "Can we . . . try again, please?"

You nod, feeling an odd sense of relief at this resolution. "I'd like that."

His reply is sleazy, no doubt about it, but what you expect from Eita after knowing him for the better half of your life by now. You can’t even fault yourself for trying to think positively of him otherwise for once, giving him the benefit of the doubt that his cleaned up act and pretty flowers were for his sister instead of some random chick.

The air around you is abuzz with students taking pictures with family members and old friends who are moving away after the convocation. Laughter, tears, hugs and four years worth of school memories are packed so tightly in the gymnasium of your soon-to-be former high school.

Tomorrow, you’ll no longer be high school students. A new chapter looms over each head under the same roof fitted with a graduation cap, all riddled with both uncertainty and excitement for the future.

One of the students taking a group photo from beside you accidentally bumps into your shoulder, apologizing profusely as you reassure them it’s nothing while Eita watches you fix your graduation gown and cap.

He whistles lowly as you readjust the pins in your hair keeping it in place on your head before snarkily remarking, “can’t believe you’re old now.”

You have half a mind to punch him before he can finish his next sentence. “What’s it like being a granny now?”

“Oi, watch your mouth,” you scoff. “You’ll be in the same position as me and your sister in three years time. Don’t get all cocky about your youth when it’s ever shortening with each passing second.”

He pretends to stab himself in the chest with the thorny end of the bouquet, earning a dead pan stare from you in response. “Ouch, always so cold-hearted.”

You sigh, feeling an oncoming headache from not only his antics but the high volume surrounding you on all fronts. “Where has your nee-san ran off to anyways?” You ask him, questioning where on earth your best friend has gone when all you want to do is take commemorative photos together and then crash on your bed back home after the ceremony.

To no surprise (but your surely disappointment), Eita shrugs.

“Who knows,” he chuckles, glancing around the gymnasium in vain. “Probably went to go makeout with her stupid boyfriend behind the bleachers out back before our mom catches her.”

“You’re one to talk,” you bite back. “How many times now have your nee-san and I walked in on you and your new girl of the week kissing on the couch when we come home from cheerleading?”

You interrupt him when he starts actually recalling on one hand the many times that scenario has played out already. “Don’t answer that, stupid. It was rhetorical.”

“It was three times,” he comments.

“I just told you not to answer.”

“I did anyways,” he grins, saddling up beside you as a rather large family begins taking photos on both sides of you, already shrinking the limited personal space you managed to keep to yourself so far.

“Oh, I almost forgot,” he then mentions, passing the bouquet to your (reluctant) arms and digging around in his pockets, pulling out a button from inside before handing it to you. It looks like it came from his school blazer, and you purse your lips to restrain yourself from accidentally breaking out into a laugh.

You’ve never known Eita to be so cheesy when in love, even going so far as to do the whole cliche “third button” confession legend and buying his mystery girl flowers. Though truthfully, you don’t think you’ve ever seen him in love period.

Whether his feelings for her are genuine or a fleeting crush, you’re the slightest bit amused and proud of him for straying away from the sleazy, playboy persona he usually puts on.

( It’s not much, but y’know, baby steps are a lot for a guy like Eita, who has had more girlfriends at fifteen than boyfriends you’ve had at eighteen. 

Strangely enough, you’ve noticed a strange decline in the amount of girls he ‘hangs out with’ a few months back. You assume it has something to do with the flowers in your hands. )

“Geez,” you snort, now unable to see his face from over the flowers in your hands. The bouquet is surprisingly heavy and tall, packed with baby’s breath and other fillers along with several colourful varieties of blossoms. Must’ve cost him quite a pretty penny.

“No ‘thank you’ for holding your confessional flowers for your next victim?” You begin to joke.

“No ‘thank you nee-san’s best friend, I love you’?”

A laugh slips past your lips at the latter half of your words, tone obviously afflicted with tinges of sarcasm when you soon realize Eita hasn’t chuckled in response, or even made some snarky comment yet directed at you about how he’d ‘never go for a girl like you’.

You poke your head to the side, noticing how the usually witty boy has now gone silent. A light flush of red dusts over his cheeks and the back of his neck, gaze downcast at the gym floor as he licks his lips.

“Actually, about that . . .”
