Michael Whelan, cover art for "Otherland 4: Sea of Silver Light" by Tad Williams
The ending of this novel series was utter garbage. But the cover is good.

From the RPG designer Tarot ask game.
The Devil ā What motifs or mechanics do you just keep coming back to? OR What is a game youāve enjoyed playing in the last year?
I talked in Luke's devil ask about what a big sicko I am for dice pools and how much I liked playing Last Train to Bremen ā so I'm going to try and avoid that one here and talk about cards instead. I love a deck of cards! I've been circling around finding a way to use them as more than just a prompt deck ā first in Mirror Mirror, a very small game jam game about convincing your partner that you are the real person and they are the reflection, then in Otherland, another jam submission where you turn over cards one by one to draw a map of fairyland in the style of an exquisite corpse*, and now finally in The Book of 13 Hours, my most explicitly "we're just doing magic here" game, which offers thirteen different ways to use a deck and an icon to talk to a god(dess).
Idk. I like cards a lot, and I like thinking about them as physical objects and not just randomness generators. I feel the same way about dice, but I think cards ā by virtue of their physical form ā are a little easier to use to break people of the idea that drawing a card/rolling a die is equivalent to a random number generator.
*Otherland is, imo, one of my more prototype-y prototypes. I'm not totally pleased with where it sits, even as one of my scrimshaw games, but I mention it because it's worth tracking the development of an idea.
The Sun ā Talk about a game youāve made that youāre proud of.
Less a game I've made ā more a game I'm making. I think every designer has a project that they, if given a pension or whatever, could work on for the rest of their lives and mine is Leafs House. Leafs House is a work of interactive fiction about exploring an empty old house on the borders of fairyland. It's about nostalgia and loss and the first chapter ā about fifty pages ā is the only thing that exists online right now.
In it, you explore the first room of a big old house full of little secrets and hidden games. Leafs House was originally conceived of as a kind of a games portfolio in the form of a game ā even though I've moved away from that particular version of it, you can still find little pared down or early versions of Beneath Pirate Flags, Grief in the Grand City, and March of the Holly King ā among others ā hidden in the text. It is going to grow.
I want to come back to it someday. I haven't found the time yet. You can get it through my patreon ā or in another way, which is secret :)
AU Thursday: Smilerās Otherland -- Domains!
Hi everyone, Iām back on my Smilerās Otherland bullshit! :D After making my initial āhereās my first ideas on the conceptā post back in May 2023, Iāve been trying to get my thoughts organized regarding what Smilerās Otherland should look like, more details about their weapons, how many outfits they need, etc. And now Iām going to share some of those thoughts with all of you! Because itās my tumblr and youāre my captive audience. :p
So -- letās start with the domains! Because you canāt have an Otherland without actual, you know, lands in it. So far, Iāve come up with four domains for Smiler:
Smile Street: The āhubā domain, or at least the domain any visitors would be likely to land in first, much like Aliceās Vale of Tears or Victorās Living Dead Forest. This domain is arguably the "coziest," and allows Smiler to put their best smiling face forward. :D
-->As indicated by the name, itās a long winding street lined with brightly-painted houses in all colors of the rainbow -- in fact, here, the shot of Towers Street from this The Smiler ad gives you a good idea of what Iām picturing:
Only, instead of just those spiraling yellow clouds in the sky, there's also a big yellow sun featuring a Smiler-logo face on it, as per this screenshot from this video on The Smiler mobile game: (WARNING -- the linked video does have flashing lights/strobe-like images starting about midway through!)
...maybe a little less overtly creepy, as this is supposed to be the friendliest domain, but you get what I mean.
-->And who lives in those cheery little houses? Why, the Advocates, of course! Who are based on these guys from The Smiler mobile game (screenshot from the same video linked above):
You know, just a little higher resolution. XD They're naturally very friendly, greeting visitors enthusiastically, and spend most of their time wandering around, trimming trees and hedges into spirals, having little get-togethers in each other's yards where they tell jokes and laugh a lot, playing various games with each other, painting big grinning faces on portable easels -- that sort of thing.
-->At the end of the street is -- well, the town SPIRAL rather than square, as the road just spirals in on itself until it stops at a big fountain full of glowy yellow liquid at the center. Around the outer curve of the spiral is a little cafe (which serves a variety of drinks and treats, though many of the drinks glow at least slightly, and the treats tend to have spiral decorations), a playground (with all the equipment painted with yellow and black stripes with occasional touches of purple and white), a general shop selling a variety of goods (which, yes, would basically be the shop from the Smiler Shop TV video, manned by Matt and Carol -- Smiler can put their parents into their Otherland, as a treat), and a train station consisting of a bright yellow covered platform with spiraling columns holding the roof up, a Smiler coaster car (like that seen above) for the "train," and tracks that start out flat but quickly spiral off into wild loops and twists (because, of course, the coaster itself has to serve as transport to the other two "nice" domains). Just a nice place to hang out, chat, and watch the spiral clouds swirl overhead. XD

Sorry I havenāt posted in so long I havenāt been reading much or buying any books because of paying for Christmas š© Iāll make an effort to post more but I am still here!
Also, currently looking for LitRPG recommendations because Iāve been getting into those recently. Iāve read Otherland, Eternal Online and am currently on Pixel Dust so please send me your recommendations šš»

I wish book merch were more normal. I want a notebook with The House on the Cerulean Sea on the cover, and an Artemis Fowl doormat, and a Hitch Hiker's Guide snowglobe. Keychains with Thursday Next's car. A wall hanging with the city from Otherland. A bobblehead of Jeeves. Book merch!
