I turn back to my work, using my free hand to pick out the last threads from my fourth attempt at a spell. “Are you going to break my arm?”

My mother has never looked so small and so old to me as when she drops her hand from my wrist. “I would never hurt you.”

“Jacksonville? You’re in fucking Jacksonville? Who the fuck—Paul. Paul,” he sighs, “who the fuck wakes up in the middle of the night and says ‘I’m gonna drive to Jacksonville. That’s a thing I’m going to do and not tell anyone so they can’t stop me’, I—I swear!”

“Dad says if you swear, you’re going to Hell,” I say, tongue-in-cheek.

“Oh, shut the fuck up. When are you coming home?”

so the first draft is officially done, and will be uploaded to wattpad on a semi-regular schedule until it’s complete! i’ll be letting it rest before i do revisions + once i do revisions, i’ll be taking it down before i ask for active feedback on the second draft
