Orphion did not need to give you the "choice" he did
So I'm writing a fanfic which retells the ROL quest line from the perspective of my Soldier Oc, Gene Eric. So in research for that I'm rereading the Taproots quest dialog, as that's going to be the first chapter, and in doing that I realized something.
The "Choice" (in quotes because it absolutely was not a choice) Orphion gives you is completely removed from the actual issue the Light Beast had with Lari. Orphion's main problem with Lari, is that her emotions and moral beliefs get in the way of her killing the parasite, and the "Choice" given to the Soldier is meant to ensure that the Soldier has no such qualms. But the thing is, that killing the parasite is not a problem of utilitarian vs denotological ethics. Killing the parasite would have been a righteous action which would have had a positive outcome for thousands, making it perfectly justified by either philosophy.
Lari's issue is that her religious upbring, which is based off the effects which Light has on the Realm of Physicality, leads her to believe that all life is sacred and that non-violent solutions is how she is meant to apply her powers. In this she's not acting in really any moral philosophy I can think of besides just being a pacifist.
The problem with the "Choice" comes from the fact that it's a trolley problem which the player already made a choice on in an earlier quest. Urelix's factory is for all intents and purposes evil, something which is brought up several times anytime it mentioned (IE An Iron Heart 1&2, Taproots, and A Hunter's Calling.) And if you bear the Greaves of Honor like I do, you already made a choice which should have stopped its operations. Yet Orphion decides that a choice between keeping it running or dooming Wynn to destruction is the perfect way to test if you can, let me check my notes, ah yes, kill a parasite which the Realm of Physicality would be far better without. An action which will require no sacrifice except time and some health, and won't, you know doom several dozen people to eternities of war and unfeeling steel.
The "Choice" makes no sense, it's a trolley problem to prove you can solve something which isn't a trolley problem, and the fact that Orphion forces you into the "correct" option doesn't actually prove anything about your character. Other than that Orphion is willing to beat his chosen into submission (granted that was just because I was really stubborn and continuely killed Urelix for like a good ten minutes before giving up and killing the mayor).
My point is that Orphion could have given the Soldier any other choice, and I at least would have been far more willing to work with him. Heck, why not just place the Soldier in Lari's posistion, we know that viewing history and interacting with it is possible through magic, even if has no actual effect. Just show us the scene of Lari not killing the parasite, and then place the Soldier in the scene itself, and see if they will kill it. Likely, the Soldier will, and their heartbeat will actually beat in time with the Light Beast's rather than having to be coerced to work with him.
So yeah, that's my thoughts on Orphion, he's honestly kind of a bully when you get down to it, with his negligent treatment of Lari, and his potentially tyrannical treatment of the player. Long story short, war is horrible on those who are conscripted into it, and even more so when the generals leading it are being with no regard or understanding of mortal morality.
P.S. No Guardian of the Forest, the tree is not evil for resisting the axe, but the doctor turning people into unfeeling subservient robots, definitely is.
Is just a normal Orphion
