The types of characters I've identified so far are...
The farmhouse, though the literal center of the cornfield / underworld is a crossroads for the narrator, giving her a chance to attempt escape. As she choose not to, her doom is set, thus transforming Jake into a wielder of orphan magic. Without the narrator, Jake and his universe are cleaved — literally and figuratively.
The examples I'm finding most readily for the orphan uhoria blue highway road narrative are all ghost stories. The salient qualities of this narrative are the solo traveler: an orphan either literally or figuratively; a destination or location out of time; and access to a road that isn't as sure a bet as a railroad or an interstate.
Off road is the catch-all state when the path isn't as tangible as a railroad, an interstate, a highway, streets in a town. Nor is off-road as magical or metaphorical as the last three routes: the maze, the labyrinth, and the cornfield. Put another way, off road is the cross roads of the road narrative routes.

Road movie protagonists, even if they travel in small groups, are usually isolated and solitary.

The solitary aspect of the road narrative manifests with the most power in the orphan stories. An orphan — whether literal or metaphorical has the power go to places that others cannot.
Even when the protagonist has a family, they're often adopted, thus still giving them access to orphan magic. Siblings, though, bring a different dynamic to the journey.

1. Always keep your focus on the next step ahead.Â
2. Don't ever be telling anybody the whole truth. Little truths are okay if you find someone to trust.
3. Don't talk to people you shouldn't be talking to, or your wandering time will be up for sure.
