another original horror story.
i've always been fascinated by the idea that something can learn to imitate a person long before it understands what it means to be one.
this one's called Borrowed Voices.
Alice didn't remember much before the crash. It was late, she'd been doing a late night study session and decided to come back home anyways. She closed her eyes and the next thing she knew she was crawling out of her wrecked car.
She wasn't moving, but her body crawled up the cliff side, stumbling. Her body carried itself up the hill and to the side of the road and hung it's head. Blood dripped from her forehead onto the ground.
She didn't feel any pain.
Why couldn't she feel any pain?
She stared off and leaned up, her body following her own command as she stared up the dark road. The only illumination came from the sparse street lamps and the moon shining through the canopy.
Home. She needed to get home.
Her hands searched her pockets for her phone to call for help, but they were empty.
"Shit." she finally broke the silence before walking. She didn't live much further. She just had to get home.
She only remembered the first mile of her trek, the rest was a haze. The next thing she remembered clearly was seeing her father's house. She had made it, somehow.
He wasn't home, working a late shift. It was for the best, he would lose his mind if he saw her like this.
She stumbled up to the door and grasped the handle. The knob seized. Locked.
She let out a weak whimper as she rested her head on the door. No... Fuck. She wanted to get into her bed. She sat back against the door and slid down, staring off at the stars sprinkled over the night sky. It could have been a worse view. She dozed off, deciding to wait for her father to come home.
Her body moved itself once more, stumbling around the exterior of the house before finding a window. It took a few tries but eventually the window opened. They crawled in, falling onto the floor, laying out and staring up at the ceiling. Home. They were home.
After a brief recovery, her body rose once more, closing the window. Clean. Alice wanted to be clean.
The head turned and took in the room, the dining room. Where was the shower? They walked towards the bedroom, the bathroom would be in the bedroom. They would use the bathroom to clean up.
They turned on the water, removing the stained clothes. They could clean her.
Alice was startled awake by the warm water on her skin, gasping. What? What happened, where was she?
Her eyes darted around the room, desperate for purchase. Her eyes finally landed on her own reflection, blood. Blood all over her face. Oh god. She looked so much worse than she had expected. She tried to step out, to get a better look.
Her body refused to obey. Instead it began to clean itself.
She felt a tightness in her chest as she desperately fought to move her limbs.
"*Stop.*"
She froze.
"What?"
*"We are unclean. Let us help."*
"Who- who the fuck- what the fuck do you mean?!"
"*Blood, your father will be worried.*"
"I- I cannot... No- no this is just... something psychological. I hit my head in the wreck. That's all this is."
The voice did not respond again, but it did not relinquish control until the water ran clear.
It stepped out and wrapped her in a towel before letting her take over again.
Alice finally moved, stumbling forward, landing on the vanity. She looked at her reflection, staring into her own eyes. What the fuck. What the fuck was going on?
Something else caught her eye, a lack of something. She didn't have any scrapes, cuts, bruises. Nothing. She looked perfectly fine.
She suddenly moved out of the bathroom. She needed to get dressed and get to a hospital.
Before she could make it out of the bedroom she screamed out, collapsing to the floor. It felt like the nerves in her back were on fire, the muscles in her back suddenly tight in a way they were not meant to flex.
*"No hospital."* It snapped firmly, determined. No. No it would not leave. It refused.
Tears welled in her eyes as the grip tightened until she was sobbing into the ground, digging her nails into the carpet, "Who- who are you!?" she begged, trying to crawl out of the bedroom.
The voice was silent now, simply holding her down from within her own body. It refused to release her until it was promised safety.
She began to sob, curling up against the coarse fibers, "F- fine! Fine I won't go, just please stop!"
As the agreement passed her lips, the pain immediately subsided. As if nothing had ever happened.
She didn't move to her feet though, staring off at the wall.
"What are you?" she asked, her voice faint.
*"I do not know."*
"How can you not know what you are?"
*"The same as you do not know what I am? What you know, I know."*
Alice leaned up and touched her face, there wasn't a single mark on her head. She did not understand how this happened nor what this thing was in her head.
"There... There is no way you're real, you- you're just something I am hallucinating from trauma. That has to be it."
*"That does not feel correct."*
"I- I do not care what feels correct!" she snapped, standing up and walking to her bedroom, "You- You are not real. And if I cannot go to the hospital then- then I will just have to begin looking it up myself."
*"Looking it up? What does that entail?"*
"It entails you not talking to me anymore!"
With that, she sat at her desk. She began looking for instances of people hallucinating after car wrecks, or just hearing things after anything traumatic. The best she could find were people who relived their incidents.
*"That does not describe our situation."*
"I- I didn't ask you!"
She held her face and slumped back. What the hell was this thing. She took one final glance at the screen before shutting it down and climbing into her bed. She would just rest. Rest would help. She would wake up and she would be better.
A few hours later she was woken by her father shaking her.
"Alice! Where the hell is your car??" He snapped. His brows were pinched and he looked panicked.
"I... Huh...?" she muttered, looking very confused. She stared into her fathers eyes, lost.
*"Car accident."*
"I wrecked my car..." she muttered, "and walked home."
"You- you wrecked?? Where? Are- Are you alright?"
"I am... fine. Just shaken up, that's all." she lied. She could not tell him about the voice in her head. He would definitely force her to go to the hospital if she even began to mention that.
He frowned and nodded some, "Where is your car? We will need to get it towed at least."
She looked away, biting her cheek, "I... Drove off the edge of the road coming up the mountain. It's stuck in some trees."
His face paled at that, "Alice?! You- you need to go to the hospital! Good god- you- you should not have even slept-" he left the room suddenly, leaving her there.
She leaned up and swallowed, no. Her stomach twisted in knots and the nerves in her spine began to tingle. She stood and walked out, "Dad? Dad no I am fine! I swear." she begged, "Please just- if I feel bad I will go, but I don't want to. It- It will cost way too much and it's- it's not worth it!"
*"Cost too much... That seems unfair."*
She did not respond to the voice in her head, she just looked at her father, pleading with those doe eyes. She was fine. See? There was absolutely nothing wrong with her.
He met her gaze, holding his keys tight.
"Promise me if you start feeling bad that you will let me know. You will go to the hospital if something is wrong."
Alice looked at him and swallowed but nodded, "Yes sir."
He sighed, setting the keys down on the table as he walked over, taking her face into his hands, "You look fine. No cuts or bruises at least..." He muttered, "Do your ribs hurt? Take a deep breath."
She went through this song and dance with him until he was pleased with her home prognosis.
He sighed and took out his phone, "I'm going to go see if we can get your car towed out... Hopefully the damage isn't too bad."
She did not want to tell him that her car was probably fucked. So she nodded as he walked out onto the porch.
*"He is very caring. You are lucky."*
"Shut up. You- You do not need to talk about my family. Or even talk at all. Can you just- just go away?" she grumbled, walking back into her bedroom and sitting at her desk. The voice did not respond again and she was thankful for that. She stared at the empty search engine.
What the hell did she even begin to search up..?
She looked at her bedroom door... She needed to go back to her car. Whatever this thing was inside her, it had to have originated in that forest.
*"We are going back?"*
"Yes."
======================
When they arrived at the scene, the tow truck was already dragging her car off of the bluff. She stared at it, the windshield was shattered and she could see it. Blood. Her blood on the dashboard.
She didn't even wait for her father to park the car before she climbed out and ran towards the road's edge.
The younger trees had collapsed quickly upon impact but the final tree she had landed on, the one her car had crumpled around, seemed to have fractured and splintered.
She slipped past the guy manning the winch and ran down the sharp grade.
"Alice!?" Her father called, climbing out of his car, "What are you doing? You should not be down there!"
She ignored him, walking closer to the tree.
When she finally faced it she could see past the splinters, dark, black dust coating the inside of the mostly hollow stump. What was that? She reached out to touch it before a voice stopped her, "Hey! Don't mess with that shit! Trees done been eat up by something, you're lucky it didn't crush you when you hit it!"
She stared into the inky darkness. She almost swore she could hear whispers coming from inside the tree. They were too faint. So far away. She couldn't even begin to decipher it.
*"They said we need to leave."*
Alice frowned and turned, the voice was right. The tree looked as if it would fall at any moment. She crawled up the edge of the bluff, the guy operating the winch grabbing her hand and pulling her up.
"You were in this car?"
"Yeah, a deer ran in front of me."
"Was someone else in there? That's a lot of blood."
She stared, how could she even-
But before she finished the thought her lips moved, "**The deer came through the windshield. Someone must have picked it up. Free meat is free meat, you know.**"
Alice stood stiff. What... was that?
The operator shrugged before turning to her father, "It's pretty fucked, Mike, I dunno if you're gonna want this thing fixed."
Her father frowned and crossed his arms, "Damn, I was hopin' that wouldn't be the case... Thanks for you help James, how much do I owe you?"
The man simply shook his head, "Don't worry about it, you want me to bring it back to your place?"
They agreed to bring it back so they could get anything they needed out of it, handle the insurance claim, and then they'd let them come and tow it.
Alice didn't speak a word that whole time. What the fuck had that thing done. How had it spoken for her.
The ride back to the house was a silent one, neither she nor her father said a word the whole ride back.
She needed to get rid of this thing.
==================
It took a few days for insurance to send an adjuster to come and look at the car. They were only there for a few minutes before they agreed to total the vehicle. Alice stood by and watched as the man investigated her car. He asked her questions about what had happened, she explained it as simply as she could.
"A deer ran out in front of me and I swerved to avoid it... But I guess I overcorrected..." she muttered. That was their full story they had agreed to. She had explained that insurance would try and avoid paying out if she used the wrong words to describe the incident.
The adjuster took notes and let her know if she needed medical treatment to let them know as part of the claim but that their company was glad she was okay after the ordeal.
She simply smiled and nodded, shaking his hand before he drove off.
She watched him pull out of the driveway and onto the main road, speeding off, leaving her alone outside.
"*Did we do well?*"
"I think so. I don't want them to ask me about the hospital any more." she was scared of how they would react to her seeking treatment, she could not shake that knot in her stomach.
"*May we watch more videos?*"
She sighed and turned, walking inside, "I will play them while I work on my homework."
The voice made a pleased sound, sinking off into the background as Alice walked inside. Her father was still at work and was very thankful for the week her college had given her off after the accident. From in person classes at least, they still gave her work and virtual meetings.
As she sat down and began letting a random shuffle of music videos play on the second screen for the thing inside her she heard a soft humming sound. This thing was... humming to the music. Her eyes darted over to the screen and she slowly moved her mouse to the skip button. This- no- this thing could not be doing that. It was distracting.
Before she could even click the button, though, her hand moved back to her main monitor. The thing... wasn't even focusing on her and it... had moved her away. She just stared ahead. How had it gotten so good at that?
=========================
When she finally went back to class after the accident, she hadn't gotten many answers to what the thing was. Things seemed relatively normal though, the thing, it had asked her to call it Allie but she refused, had not done anything explicit in a little while. Sure it sometimes moved her and everything but most the time it moved her out of the way of something that could have hurt her.
She, despite everything, had begun to value the creature. It had saved her, she realized that, after the accident, the least she could do was let it ride around in the back of her mind and experience the world.
That was a fair trade, yes?
*"Yes."*
She flinched at the sudden sound, "What- are- Are you listening to my thoughts??"
They were silent for a brief moment.
"*No...*"
She sighed and walked up to the elevator, her foot tapping. It was still an invasion of her privacy she did not appreciate, but other than that this thing did not seem malicious.
She stepped inside and leaned against the back wall, riding up to her class when a flyer caught their eye. An event for a club, Acapella Tryouts.
"*We should go.*"
She glanced over, reading the paper quickly, "No. Absolutely not. I do not sing."
"*But we can sing?*"
"I'm not going to humiliate myself in front of all of those people, no."
The voice went silent, they didn't say another word for the rest of her classes. Thankfully this thing had learned to respect her time at school.
Mostly.
During her last class, Alice had dozed off. This lecture was always boring.
Though to everyone else, she sat up, attentive. No one could have known.
When the professor dismissed the class, Allie packed their bag and left, heading back to the elevator.
They took out Alice's phone and scanned the QR code to register for the tryouts. Alice didn't have to know. But they wanted to try.
A voice chimed in from behind, "You thinking about trying out Alice?"
They turned and stared, this was one of Alice's acquaintances, Alice was very adamant that she didn't really have friends.
"**Oh, yes. For fun. I am sure many talented people will try out, so I do not expect to get in.**"
Maria laughed a bit at that, "That's cool, I didn't know you could sing?"
"**Yes we- I enjoy it a lot, it's very fun and freeing.**"
As the door opened, Maria slipped past, "Well good luck, if you get in you have to let me know so I can come to one of your performances!"
Allie nodded at that, waving as Maria walked down the hall. They even smiled a little bit. That was so much nicer than talking to Alice...
They took one final glance at the phone before picking a time Alice was out of class. They'd just need to get her to sleep just long enough to do the audition. It would be fine.
Allie walked back to the car, they'd seen and felt Alice drive home tons of times. They could surely do the same, right?
They slipped into the drivers seat of the rental and touched everything. The wheel, the dash. This was the longest they'd been able to take over outside of the house.
Everything felt so real, the cracks in the leather wheel grazed against their fingers, the heat of the dash warmed by the sun burned in the nicest way.
They took a deep breath and went through the motions, cranking the car, hearing the engine rev up, pressing the brake, and shifting into drive.
Alice always treated driving like it was this huge, stressful thing. Of course she had recently wrecked the car so that could be part of it but Allie? Allie loved this, loved feeling untethered, like they could go anywhere, do anything.
Hopefully Alice wouldn't be too upset with them.
While they drove they heard something in the back of their mind. A groaning, like someone was waking up. They drove up the same winding mountain road when the voice was suddenly crystal clear.
"What- what's going on!? What are you doing!" Alice snapped. She sounded... Very angry.
Allie flinched some but kept driving, "**You fell asleep, I did not want you to get in trouble in class. Then I started driving us home?**"
"You- you can't do that! You can't just take control of my body? You- how are you even driving the car?!"
"**What you know, I know, you can drive therefore I can...**"
"You- no. No you pull over right now and give me my body back."
"**But we're almost-**"
"No. No buts. Pull over. Now."
Allie frowned and found the next safe spot and pulled off. They looked at their hands and then the wheel. They didn't want to give it up, but they didn't want Alice to be mad with them.
Carefully they relinquished their control over the body and slipped back into Alice's mind.
Alice flexed her fingers and frowned hard, "Do not ever do that again."
"*I- I'm sorry.*"
Alice drove the rest of the way in silence. She was upset, but she was more scared than anything. This thing. This thing had controlled her body and she... She had to be allowed back in control.
She didn't like this feeling.
Allie didn't either.
============
When it finally came time to get ready for the tryouts, Allie was struggling. Alice had decided to stay on campus and study, which was great to keep them on campus but bad because Alice was not resting.
Allie didn't want her to be awake when they took over otherwise she would be upset and yelling while they tried to sing. They wanted a real chance?
They silently wondered if, being inside of Alice's head, they could make her tired.
"*What are you working on now?*"
Alice did not respond, continuing to work on her paper.
"*You're stressed out, don't you want to take a break maybe?*"
Silence. Her typing grew louder. She desperately hoped that ignoring the voice rattling off in her head would silence it.
"*I'm not going to go away just because you ignore me, Alice. Please just talk to me...*"
She growled before standing up, leaving her things on the table. She slammed open the door to the bathroom and locked it behind her.
"Shut up. Stop. I don't know what you're not getting. I- I do not like you. I do not want you. This is my body. This is my life. You are just some parasite that is in my head."
Allie was silent. Alice could feel their pain in her own chest. She stood there, glaring into the mirror, she wanted to make sure her point got across.
"Am I clear."
"*Crystal.*" their voice was flat in this moment, and as Alice turned to grab the door her body stopped obeying her. She tried to regain the control over her limbs but Allie had easily taken over.
They walked out of the bathroom and gathered up Alice's things, taking care as they put them into the bag.
"You- what- what are you doing!" Her voice was less confident, shaky, "Stop!"
"**No. No this is our body. I am here. I cannot leave. You have to share it with me. It isn't fair!**" they tossed the bag over their sho
