my hc is that h.isoka grew up with an understanding that due to her nen, there might come a day when it may truly come down to her life or his. while he was never sure what he would truly choose if it came down to it, i think that shaped a lot of his behavior later in his life, like seeking the strongest nen users he could, testing his abilities, learning so much expertise in the inner workings of nen.
