Gundamn it! selfie
Attending the 2016 Gunpla Expo at the Takashimaya Square of the Ngee Ann City (義安) commercial center, along Orchard Road in Singapore.
A Gunpla event celebrates the Gundam (ガンダム) anime (アニメ) and manga (漫画) series about military “real robot” mecha (リアルロボット riaru robotto), which started with the 1979-1980 television anime series “Kidō Senshi Gandamu” (Mobile Suit Gundam / 機動戦士ガンダム) by Yoshiyuki Tomino (富野 由悠季, born 1941). The concept of military units comprised of armored robots in full scale battle broke the trend of gigantic "super robots" (スーパーロボッ,ト sūpā robotto) that were the fashion of that time, and since then Gundam has had a growing loyal fan base with more anime shows and movies produced each year.
Gunpla (ガンプラ, Ganpura) or Gundam Plastic Models started in 1980; when the Kabushiki-gaisha Bandai (株式会社バンダイ, est. 1950) released its first plastic scale models of the mecha on that year. Since then, 715 million Gundam plastic model units have been sold worldwide.
This picture was taken circa 2016, when my companions and I visited our Singaporean partners. I was walking along Orchard Road and I was intrigued by the hubbub coming from the Ngee Ann City. Apparently the Gunpla fans were going gaga with the appearance of the voice actors Kengo Kawanishi (河西健吾, born 1985) and Yuka Terasaki (寺崎 裕香, born 1983), who played the characters of Mikazuki Augus and Kudelia Aina Bernstein for the then-ongoing 2015-2017 television series “Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans” (機動戦士ガンダム 鉄血のオルフェンズ, Kidō Senshi Gandamu: Tekketsu no Orufenzu). The fans went further into a frenzy when the J-Pop star Miho Karasawa (唐沢 美帆, born 1983), aka True, came on stage to sing the show’s ending theme "STEEL: Tekketsu no Kizuna-" (STEEL-鉄血の絆-, "STEEL: Iron Blooded Bonds").
The Ngee Ann City Takashimaya was constructed in 1993, and designed by Arch. Raymond Woo.
