A fun evening of microfishing the Ohio River resulted in loads of Mimic Shiners and a single Orangespotted Sunfish
I think most people come to Texas with dreams of big fish, but I had my goal set on much smaller species. In this case an Orangespotted Sunfish, one of the largest ones I’ve caught yet
A gorgeous little Orangespotted Sunfish, I actually drove to this lake specifically to try to get a male of this species for some photographs. The males are much more colorful than the females, and this was the first brightly colored individual I’ve gotten to see in person
Sometimes familiar places still manage to surprise you. I’ve fished this creek for years and today was the first time I have ever found an Orangespotted Sunfish here

This is a small species of sunfish that most people don’t even know exists: the Orangespotted Sunfish. These little fish love turbid water and typically can be caught near shallow rocks. They can grow up to around 4 inches, but are rarely caught by anglers due to their small mouths. This is one of the many species that makes me grateful that I microfish
Aren’t Orangspotted Sunfish a pretty fish? I have three happily living in my fish tank right now and they are so amusing to watch
SunFish
The Sun Fish (orangespotted) is ecologically unique and thrives in turbid, shallow systems that have few predators and low oxygen contents. The species prefers vegetated areas in sluggish backwaters or lakes, and can also be found in turbid rivers. The Orange-spotted sunfish can extend its range in lower-quality waters, which is not characteristic to other sunfish.
