the words in front of her were starting to blur, but huxley couldn’t go home. she couldn’t turn in. not when she was so close. she still had too much to do. the book wasn’t allowed to leave the library, she could only read it in her cubicle. it needed translating, and huxley hated that it was taking her so long. she had spent so much time studying greek and yet here she was still struggling. she tried not to think of it that way, just that it was such an old interpretation anyone would struggle. but nothing was making sense, at all.
she knew she should be leaving, it was well-past midnight and even night-owl students were tuning it. she was the only one left on her floor, the only phd student still stuck in their cubicle. others had gone home to families or friends or food. not huxley, she had to finish this. and just as her eyes dropped closed again, threatening to ruin her work, a loud smash pulled her away. leaning away from her desk she glanced around the quiet and darkening floor. “hello?” maybe this was a horror movie, maybe this was how she died. what a waste.
