Bij PAH zorgt de toegenomen bloeddruk in het longvaatbed voor een overbelasting van de rechter hartkamer, wat leidt tot hartfalen van de rechter hartkamer en uiteindelijk tot de dood. Ondanks grote stappen die de afgelopen decennia zijn gemaakt in de behandelmogelijkheden voor volwassenen, is PAH op de kinderleeftijd nog steeds een verwoestende ongeneeslijke ziekte. Perioperative inflammation and hypotension T. Rettig Each year over 1.4 million surgical procedures are performed in the Netherlands. In general, surgery is considered safe by doctors and their patients. However, outcome can vary greatly between different types of surgery. For example, complications are common after major surgery. The negative impact of postoperative complications on long-term outcome is of significant concern to patients and their clinicians. The pathophysiological mechanisms of complications after surgery, however, are largely unknown. Acquired Demyelinating Syndromes: Focus on Neuromyelitis Optica and childhood-onset Multiple Sclerosis Danielle van Pelt Acquired Demyelinating Syndromes (ADS) cover a broad spectrum of inflammatory demyelinating syndromes in the CNS, of which multiple sclerosis (MS) is the most common subtype. This thesis focuses on two relatively rare clinical subtypes of ADS: Neuromyelitis Optica Spectrum Disorders (NMOSD) and childhood-onset ADS including MS. Awareness and recognition of uncommon ADS subtypes are of importance for clinicians, since those require a distinct diagnostic and therapeutic approach. Design and Effectiveness of a Serious Game for Children with ADHD Kim C. M. Bul The serious game developed during project HealSeeker is called “Plan-It Commander” and is focused on promoting behavioural strategies in domains of daily life functioning such as time management, planning/organizing, and prosocial (i.e., cooperation) skills that have shown to be problematic for school-aged children with ADHD. The goal of this dissertation is to describe the design process of the serious game “Plan-It Commander” and to explore its effectiveness on behavioural and neurocognitive outcomes in school-aged children with ADHD. In addition, we tried to identify subgroups of children for whom “Plan-It Commander” is most effective. The main findings from the design process, pilot study and RCT are provided, followed by an overall discussion of the results. Next, the clinical implications of our findings and limitations of our studies are discussed. HRM EN PRESTATIES IN HET PRIMAIR ONDERWIJS TESSA JANSSEN Binnen de onderwijssector is er steeds meer aandacht voor het verhogen van de onderwijskwaliteit en prestaties. Human Resource Management (HRM) kan hier een rol in spelen. Uit de HRM en prestaties literatuur blijkt dat in verschillende sectoren HRM een positieve bijdrage kan leveren aan verschillende typen prestaties, waaronder organisatieprestaties. Hoe de relatie tot stand komt en welke factoren hieraan bijdragen kan verschillen per organisatie en per sector. Dit onderzoek richt zich op de relatie tussen HRM en prestaties in het primair onderwijs. Een sector waarin nog relatief weinig onderzoek is gedaan naar de relatie tussen HRM en prestaties. De vraag die hierbij centraal staat is hoe deze relatie in het primair onderwijs verklaard kan worden. BATTLING OBESITY – EFFORTS IN PREVENTING KNEE OSTEOARTHRITIS B. DE VOS This thesis describes the results of the first preventive randomized controlled trial worldwide in the field of knee osteoarthritis. The preventive effectiveness of a tailor-made lifestyle intervention, consisting of diet and exercise, is described in detail. Short-term results are briefly discussed, but the focus is on long-term results and the achieved behavioural changes in lifestyle. Additionally, the preventive effect of oral glucosamine sulfate on incident knee osteoarthritis is described.
