So, kind of randomly tonight, I decided to check out Gounod's La nonne sanglante (The Bloody Nun), and boy am I glad I did!
I typically don't get into Gounod, but I like this one quite a bit. The choruses are super exciting and the big duet at the end is particularly awesome. Other than Michael Spyres, I didn't know the other singers, but this cast from the Opera Comique are all excellent. The production is kind of neat too, this very stylized opening battle scene is cool, and all the ghost stuff suitably creepy.
Which brings me to a particularly important point--this is the perfect Halloween season opera.
The production I watched is on Marquee TV. Not sure where else folks might be able to find it, but it's a good one for this time of year.
