🔬 The “Big Science” Problem – When Will the Next Paradigm Shift Happen? ↩️ Modern science faces an intriguing dilemma: The truly big questions—from dark matter to the structure of the universe—now require ever-larger machines, increasingly complex infrastructures, and enormous resources. 👉 Research is no longer a matter of “desktop experiments,” but rather Big Science. Yet with this growing effort, a critical question arises: Will we still witness real breakthroughs—or only incremental progress? In our Zoomposium with Prof. Dr. Thomas Naumann (member of the ATLAS experiment at CERN, honorary professor at the University of Leipzig, and former head of the Particle Physics Group at DESY) and Dr. Ilja Bohnet (scientist at DESY, research fellow of the Helmholtz Association, and author), we explore these open questions in modern physics: • Are fundamental problems in science today being suppressed rather than solved? • Is the fragmentation of research an obstacle to new discoveries? • And above all: Are we nevertheless on the verge of a new paradigm shift?
