One of Us Is Lying is a young adult mystery thriller that begins when five high school students — Bronwyn, Nate, Addy, Cooper, and Simon — end up in detention together. Only four walk out alive. When Simon, the creator of a gossip app that exposes students’ secrets, dies under suspicious circumstances, the remaining four become prime suspects in a murder investigation.

The novel’s biggest strength is its suspense. Each chapter is told from a different character’s perspective, which keeps the story engaging and allows the reader to see multiple sides of the truth. As secrets are revealed, the line between innocent and guilty becomes increasingly blurred.

The characters are more complex than they first appear. Although they start off as high school stereotypes — the brain, the criminal, the princess, and the athlete — the story gradually peels back layers to show their real struggles, fears, and motivations.

The pacing is fast, with plenty of twists that keep readers guessing until the very end. While some plot elements stretch believability, the mystery remains compelling and well-structured overall.
