manfred feels like he needs to earn his death before he can cross over, that unfinished business that pushed him to midnight never stopped after he arrived, all it did was settle him down in a place he can now call home. there's still so much he has to do, including protect his little found family and keep the town safe, and help those contacts and clientele he has for his business.
death for him is ever expanding, especially since moving to midnight with his ever growing new knowledge of the supernatural and paranormal. there's never an end, it can never be fully learned because despite the laws of nature, things do evolve and change.
when that darkness does come, he just wants to have made right by the life he now has in a place he never thought he'd get to.
