Kaneko's Omoikane reminds me of the Martians from Metal Slug. Was his design influence by those alien designs with the squishy brain or head you see in fiction?
SMT2 predates 1996's Metal Slug by two years!
I really like these, though. Kinda brings me back to a particularly tense time watching a friend make his way through Metal Slug 3, only to die at the final boss. No shame, though, the game's tough.
I guess Omoikane could be eventually traced to the sci-fi brains-in-jars trope but you'd be hard-pressed to discover the exact reference Kaneko may have used.
