Another morning (12.30) kick and a very chilly winter morning it was as we headed off to the bad lands of East London.
But just 6 minutes in, before we even had time to blow into our hands and rub them together, Arnautovic had decided today was the day he would vaguely resemble a footballer and had put his side into the lead. But still, plenty of time to come back....
We tried to find that equaliser, but we seemed slugging, slow to the ball and giving it away far too much.
The chances we did create came and went, their second keeper, Adrian, clearly up for keeping his place.
Something needed to change for us, and second half saw Pedro come on for Timmy Bakayoko to try and pick up the pace in our attack.
Victor Moses soon replaced Marcos Alonso and as we went into the last half hour, Willian came on for Davide Zappacosta.
The chances were coming, but we just couldn’t find that quality on the final ball to plant it into the back of the net.
Cesc Fabregas and Eden Hazard saw shots blocked and go wide, but Alvaro Morata’s late chance was the one that should have gone in. It didn’t. So frustrating.
Fair to say that West Ham were putting all they had behind the ball, and were willing to sacrifice a few bookings for fouls and time wasting in order to prevent us from scoring. They clearly wanted the result more than us, and desperately need the points in their perilous position at the wrong end of the league table.
A game to forget for us. The barrow boys no doubt thinking their Christmas had come early! My Christmas will come the day they are relegated.
