Farewell to the bear

Meet Lumina: the first Menai

As the eldest of the Menai, Lumina was the firstborn of the union between Selene, the moon goddess, and Endymion, the eternally slumbering shepherd. From a young age, she bore witness to her mother's sorrowful visits to her sleeping father, a sight that slowly grew into a deep-seated resentment. She could never understand how Selene could accept such a cruel fate, one that left their father in an eternal, dreamless sleep. Lumina’s frustration only grew when her younger brother, Cyrus, was cursed with eternal boyhood—another painful reminder of their mother’s inability to defy the gods’ will. Determined to free both her father and brother from their cruel destinies, she made a solemn vow to break their curses, no matter the cost.

With unwavering resolve, Lumina turned to the arcane arts, seeking the power that might one day grant her the ability to undo what fate had so mercilessly imposed upon her family. Her journey led her to the underworld, where she became a devoted student of Hecate, the goddess of magic and witchcraft. Under Hecate's tutelage, Lumina honed her skills in the dark and mysterious arts, growing stronger with each passing year. Her time in the underworld also brought her into the company of Hades and Persephone, whom she grew to admire for their wisdom and resilience in the face of divine inevitability. It was in their court that Lumina found an unexpected turn in her own fate—love.

After a painful end to her tumultuous romance with Apollo, the god of the sun, whom she discovered had been unfaithful to her, Lumina swore off love, believing it to be yet another distraction from her greater mission. But Persephone, ever the matchmaker, introduced her to Plutus, the god of abundance. Unlike the radiant and self-assured Apollo, Plutus was blind, a victim of Zeus’s curse, doomed to wander the world sightless. In him, Lumina saw a kindred spirit—another soul touched by the cruel hand of destiny. Through their shared pain and perseverance, a quiet and steadfast love blossomed, one rooted in understanding rather than fleeting passion.
