Now I originally thought that it was just an error but the more I thought about it, the more I realized it’s not.

The narrator at the beginning was getting his facts from Olive’s parents’ testimony and they thought she had been kidnapped and not accidentally taken so their claim that she was only gone for about a day is unreliable. Not to mention they had also claimed that Jerry and Buster made a ransom call as well as saying that they had set up a trap for the police to catch them which of course can't be true since they didn't even know she had been missing until she had come back.

The second time we hear the story is from Olive’s perspective where she said she had been taken accidentally which of course ends up being true, making the narrator's statement that she was gone for around 2 days also true.

All this to say, not only did Olive's parents not know she was even missing, but when they did eventually find out, they assumed it had only been for a day when it was actually two.
