One day George Martin woke up and said well I feel like writing about a dozen female characters, each with their own hero’s journey, each with their own plot, each with their own conflicts, each with their own story slightly relevant to the overall events of the tale, and each with their own way of navigating and expressing femininity in a highly and violently patriarchal society. And I’m going to give all of them a voice, and I’m going to make them have as many layers, virtues, flaws, and contradictions as any male character, so that in the end they are the most interesting characters in the damn story except for two or three men who for whatever reason also turned out really interesting but ironically don’t fit at all into the standard mold of male protagonists. And he did all of that without whipping it out or messing up his hair and for that I’m very grateful.
