We don’t really see depictions it Bangladeshi women in the UK a although maybe things are changing. She spoke no English but she was British. She looked so sad and I wanted to convey the deep sense of melancholy etched on her face in oils. The pencil sketch of the same woman is very different. Posting this painting makes me want to get my oil paints out I am actually planning my next series. Spending time at St Hilda's close to Brick Lane and being near the elderly was a real privilege; most of them must have passed away now. It's important to document these precious old faces.
