Balance Sheet
When you’re young, you have only gains
in front of you.
People, places, things, knowledge, wisdom.
When you’re old, you have mostly losses
accumulated along a lifetime of mistakenly
assuming that you’re going to live forever,
and then one day, you reached that tipping
point at middle age, and it’s been down hill
ever since, losing friends, losing family,
losing your career, losing your mind.
The only thing you’ve got more of is stuff,
money and furniture and books, and none
of that is worth a dime if you are alone.
How you keep smiling is a mystery,
but only to the young.
Because once you have everything to lose,
and nothing to gain,
any
thing
you
still have
is
gold.
