Itās a sad, sad day in our household. My older sister, Anne, passed away this morning after battling through health issues. She didnāt matter because she was my sister. As a young boy, Anne was my partner in crime in a lot of the mischievous things I did. As I got older, I just tried to be there whenever my help was needed. But most importantly, she taught me a precious and valuable lesson in life, and that is to look past a personās disabilities and see their inner beauty; to be tolerant of those that are undergoing challenges as a handicapped person and to protect and champion them any chance you get. I will certainly miss her but I know God has a special place in Heaven for her with my dad. #oldersister #oldersiblings #purelove #specialperson #bestsistereverā¤ļø #missyou #gladyouwereinmylife #loveyou #takecare #godshinesonyou #youarespecial (at Honolulu, Hawaii) https://www.instagram.com/p/ClkoNl_OaKcdAGBAsUKquaKXAb8dnJn7HmPYwQ0/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

A parentified child is a child who has given responsibilities usually handled by an adult. And now as adults, these same people may take on more responsibility at work or in a relationship because they feel like theyāre the only thing that can make the department or relationship function. For as long as I can remember, I was my brotherās keeper. As soon as he was born I had to help take care of him. I became his babysitter. His teacher. Whenever I asked if I could hang out with friends I was told only if I brought my brother along. I hated it. I was only 6 when he was born. I still feel like I missed out on so much of my childhood because I spent so much time teaching him how to read, write, math, etc. I get angry thinking about it. I donāt feel like I got to be a kid. And I understand WHY I had to step up. Both of my parents worked and we couldnāt afford a babysitter. I understood. I get it. My mom used to brag about how I was so mature at such a young age but I never took pride in it. I still get mad thinking about how I felt like a nanny more than a sister. How my brother and I are not close now. How my parents used to tell me to clean his room after I had just done the dishes and vacuumed while my brother played video games. How maybe I wouldnāt be so depressed or anxious now. But thereās no point in playing the what-if game. So now when I try to honor my inner child, I honestly donāt even know what that looks like. I wanted to be a gymnast, a dancer, an athlete. But my options for extra curriculars were taken away because I had to help take care of my brother. I think hobbies were easier to discover as a kid. There were more opportunities. Iāve always wanted to play soccer and I couldāve participated in my middle school team, but my parents didnāt have the time or money or the means to get me to and from games. Anytime I wanted to go anywhere, I was always met with āwell how are you going to get there because Iām not taking you.ā I think today Iām just mad. Iām mad I missed out on so much and I donāt know how to make up for it now. . . . . #parentifiedchild #oldersiblings #reparenting #innerchild #innerchildhealing #innerchildwork https://www.instagram.com/p/CEnHz1qjtOP/?igshid=1xh68kk7leoxc

Striptease on a bike
As is the case for many an elder sibling, they often have to mind the younger ones even when they really, really don't want to. One memory Mammy has of a day Veronica was put on her was when she was heading into town on the bike and Granny sent the little one with her. It all went ok until the journey home when the little one decided she was too hot and took off her clothes, layer by layer and arrived home quite naked. Granny wasn't impressed and Mammy had to cycle the whole way back picking the bits up. She still can't believe how she never noticed it happening!
