my grandma is 85 and yesterday she said the one thing she regrets in life is being agreeable, polite and obedient. she believed she must be content with whatever comes her way and never fuss. it led her to making objectively poor decisions for her and her family because she never wanted to be a bother, to seem demanding or ungrateful.
the plot twist is that I've always known my grandma as a mostly disagreeable, demanding and ungrateful person which means to me that later in life she vastly overcompensated for her youthful agreeability. but that day she also said 'remember you are loved by grandma' as I was leaving - the first time she used the word 'love' with me, indirectly but still.
what I'm taking from this is LET'S NOT REPEAT GRANDMA'S MISTAKES. I don't think she consciously meant it that way, but I see this as her matriarchal blessing for me to stop being a nice girl. a message I very much needed.
