"Old Joy" (idem) - mubi.
What I watched this spring! 🍀
Men can never really be friends with each other, because the sex part always gets in the way. This movie captures a particular specimen of P
this movie loses a few accuracy points for showing mark pumping his own gas in oregon, which was still very much illegal at the time, but i can forgive kelly reichardt for that. whatever u say beautiful
there are a lot of funny moments in “old joy,” but maybe the absolute funniest is the little note in the end credits informing the audience that alcohol and nudity are not allowed at bagby hot springs…

Old Joy (2006) dir. Kelly Reichardt cine. Peter Sillen
I watched Old Joy this evening, mostly out of curiousity from loving the Yo La Tengo soundtrack so much.
It's one of those slow, contemplative films that you have to really watch to understand what's going on. And I loved it. Solid 4 out of 5, for sure.
And it also got me thinking, the scene at the campfire and how I felt like there was part of me in both characters, but mostly in Kurt, in feeling there's something missing or completely gone from a friendship from many years ago. It made me think of one friend in particular and how much I wish we could have that conversation. I wish I could tell her that I miss her, how much I've missed what was us and our friendship. But I can't. Well, I can but I won't get a spoken response back because she's passed.
I thought for sure that she would outlive me since she was much healthier than I am. But covid knows no such boundaries.
So now all I can do is speak to her and hope her spirit can hear me over all of the other noise and messages coming from her other friends and family.
