Not a good picture I know but I'm just posting it to point out that on the day after a significant birthday on my part nature and the world chose to show me a coot. I couldn't tell if it was an old one but still, rude!

Walter Brennan who would have turned 126 today, was the most loyal trustworthy man you could have at your side. Just don’t let him hang you.
Swan Bostrom. Come and Get It. D: Howard Hawks and William Wyler (1936). Brennan won an Oscar as the right-hand man and best pal of an ambitious lumberjack, whose loyalty extends to marrying the saloon singer his friend leaves behind. Brennan is almost unrecognizable as a boisterous Swede (he says “Yumpin’ Yiminy” a lot) but he gives a touching performance as a man whose unswerving fidelity is taken for granted but who is faithful nonetheless. This is one of those “actor finds his niche” roles.Â
Judge Roy Bean in The Westerner. D: William Wyler (1940). This movie turns into an only decent homesteaders vs. cattlemen oater soon enough, but the first third with Gary Cooper, trying to keep the legendary “hanging judge” from stretching his neck by regaling him with stories about meeting Lily Langtry, plays as if The Arabian Nights was written by Mark Twain. Brennan won his third Oscar for playing the living Tall Tale, and, from the looks of it, had the time of his life.
Nadine Groot in Red River. D: Howard Hawks (1948). Brennan once got his teeth kicked out in a film fight and had to get false ones. He said that it was “the luckiest break in the world” since he could take them out to get parts usually given to much older actors. Groot was probably the best of these “old coot” roles. The film had a controversial ending as John Wayne, murderously enraged by adopted son Montgomery Cliff’s driving him off of his own cattle drive, forces a showdown that only becomes a fistfight. The scene is saved from corniness by Brennan’s glee that the two men he loves and whose deaths seemed inevitable, are only going to beat the crap out of each other.
