This has been a long time coming. It’s been three years since the graphic novel was announced, nearly five years since the last episode of Final Space aired, eight years since the first episode aired, a decade since Olan uploaded the pilot to YouTube, and 16 years since Gary Space as released. Needless to say, this book is the culmination of a long, complicated journey.

I’m so thrilled for Olan Rogers for getting to finally finish his story. While it may not have been exactly how he initially envisioned telling the tale, I’m glad he got to finish it on his terms. As a fan, I’m so grateful that I will get to finish a story that sucked me in eight years ago. 

It is also a bit bittersweet, since I imagine the fandom will probably quiet down even more than it already has, but even if the fandom fades, I will always be happy to call myself a Final Space fan.

Will probably delete later and I feel like I’m gonna word things very wrongly so sorry if I do that but I am so DONE with women creators being put under microscopes

Like- there’s this little drama about people being mad at Dana for saying she didn’t write frankie from kog as trans. She didn’t say anything against headcanoning her that way, just that it’s not how she thought of that. It’s ok to be disappointed it’s not canon I’m not telling you how to feel and of course it’s ok to hc her that way but there are straight, men creators who handled queer rep much worse and people are praising them which brings me to final space

Since the internet is allergic to nuance I’ll make it clear: I LOVE final space, it altered my brain chemistry in middle school, I named myself after one of the characters both online and irl. And olan Rogers (the creator of final space) seems very cool and is inspiring to me. I just hate how he handeled his queer characters because it felt like an afterthought, like thinks he owes us something. The first canonically queer characters he had (tribore and clearance) were very stereotypical and he wanted to make better rep later in the show which is understandable but I don’t like how he handeled it either, (and it has nothing to do with Warner bros holding him back even tho that was probably a huge issue) he basically did an almost game-show like thing on his socials on “which character will be confirmed as gay” he planned on making both little cato and ash gay and ofc when ash got her sapphic side plot right after her makeover which made her look like the most stereotypical lesbian ever. And it feels like he wanted little cato to be gay just because it’s the first sexuality he came up with… [personally, aroace little cato always made sense to me since it’s a very underrepresented sexuality too and he never seemed interested in romance which is normal for a 14 year old but it would be interesting in the time skip to see him realize he isn’t interested in romance at all even as an adult or just generally show him being single forever and liking it]

It felt like an afterthought, like he’s licking our ass… and I have no reason to assume he didn’t mean well but that’s how it felt… and I have no idea how we keep praising him but somehow trashing on Dana for not thinking about a character a certain way

Again, we need more representation and you can headcanon whatever character whatever you want! And even be disappointed your headcanon isn’t canon but for fuck sake what is this double standard

Also it’s just my opinion you can always disagree with how creators handeled things like this. Honestly the last thing is the lgbtq community need is cancelling random creators over stuff like that. When it comes to stuff like that we need nuanced discussions and and a space for everyone to say their opinions even if we don’t come to a conclusion at the end
