2052 Robinwood Avenue, also known as the "Rock Castle", was built in 1894 by stone mason, Michael Henahan, as his personal residence. It was later purchased by John Breymann, of G. H. Breymann & Brothers. Happy birthday to the "Godfather of Soul", who was born on this day 86 years ago. This is from my last day in Cincy and there was no way I was leaving without getting this great work of art as a digital memento. Here's a brief history of J. B. and the mural that immortalizes him. James Brown (1933-2006), one of the 20th century's greatest musical talents, got his start professionally in the mid 1950s, recording for Syd Nathan's King Records, based in Cincinnati's Evanston area. Known by numerous monikers, including "Mr. Dynamite", ironically the name of this mural, located in Over-The-Rhine (OTR). Brown recorded dozens of hits for King, such as "Please, Please, Please", "Try Me", "Prisoner Of Love", "Bewildered", "Out Of Sight", "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag", "I Got You (I Feel Good)" and many, many more. 22 Garfield Place was built in 1861 for Marcus Fechheimer, a wholesale clothier. The Italianate mansion is reportedly the earliest surviving home designed by Samuel Hannaford, Cincinnati's greatest and most prolific architect. In 1938, the Cuvier Press Club moved into the Fechheimer residence, remaining there for decades. In 1973, the building was acquired by city government and turned into senior citizens center. The Fechheimer home is the lone survivor on a block once filled with similar mansions. In 2005, Libby, Perszyk, Kathman (LPK) Inc., a global brand and innovation consultancy based in Cincinnati, purchased and restored the property, incorporating it into its headquarters with the adjacent Butterfield Center. One of the many architectural highlights of my trip to Cleveland in April was the Hope Memorial Bridge, one of two bridges that crosses the Cuyahoga River. Constructed from 1930 to 1932, the structure was originally known as the Lorain - Carnegie Bridge (it connects Lorain & Carnegie Avenues). What sets this bridge apart are four huge double-sided pylons, featuring incredible carved figures known as the "Guardians of Transportation", designed by architect Frank Walker and executed by noted sculptor Henry Hering and local stonecutters. In the 1970s, believe it or not, someone wanted to destroy these amazing works of art. County Engineer Albert S. Porter urged for the destruction of the pylons in order to add lanes to the bridge. Thankfully, Porter was unsuccessful. The bridge was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. After about 3 years of renovations, the bridge reopened in 1983 and was renamed the Hope Memorial Bridge, in honor of legendary entertainer Bob Hope and family - English immigrants who relocated to Cleveland in 1908.
