1. Favorite childhood book?
I already answered this, so I’ll go with another of my childhood favorites which is (SURPRISE) Harry Potter. The reason I put Ella Enchanted first is because I was a lot younger when I got into it. It was really the FIRST book that seriously captured my attention as a child. The first time I tried to read HP&TSS I got bored like 3 pages in. It wasn’t until (after) COS came out that I decided to give it another go and got hooked. But once I was hooked, BOY was I hooked. But yeah, that still means that HP comes in second place when it comes to my childhood books.
2. What are you reading right now?
I’m actually not really reading anything actively. The last thing I read was a short story written by my best friend. What I plan on reading next (I’ve got a nice long plane flight next week) is The Name of The Wind by Patrick Rothfuss.
6. Do you have an e-reader?
Yes, I’ve got an e-reader. I will probably always prefer physical books (it’s the smell, I think), but when I knew I was going to be moving halfway across the world… well, it seemed practical to buy an e-reader instead of trying to lug enough reading material with me to keep my occupied throughout the year. And since then, I’ve come to quite enjoy it. It’s practical to throw in my purse, and sits easily on my knees when I’m reading in bed. It’s also really great for reading classics and/or in another language because it’s got a built-in dictionary, so you don’t have to put the book down and go to your smartphone or run for a physical dictionary.
9. Least favourite book you read this year (so far)?
50 Shades of Grey trilogy. (WHY IS THERE EVEN MORE THAN ONE BOOK?!) I started reading it mostly out of curiosity. Most of what I’ve heard about it is negative, but I have a good friend who just LOVED the series. And then one of my friends started reading it to me on Skype, and it was just too hilarious to not continue reading it. It was funny for about two pages, and then the rest pretty much just made me angry. (The author doesn’t even understand how sex works, I s2g.)
10. Favorite book you’ve read this year?
I’m going to count “this year” as “the last 12 months” because I haven’t actually read anything much of note in 2014 (I think I finished 50 Shades…).
I think I’m going to go with New Spring by Robert Jordan. Most of the past year has actually been spent reading the Wheel of Time series (by the same author) because my ex recommended it. New Spring was the first book I read of it, and I quite liked it.
14. Favorite place to read?
Generally curled up on the couch/in bed. Preferably with a hot drink (tea/hot chocolate), and someone to cuddle. Mostly though, I end up reading in transit (planes, trains, etc).
Probably young adult and fantasy (sometimes the two combined). I spent so much time analyzing literature in school that when I read for pleasure, I generally want something that’s fairly simple to read. I tend to stay away from the classics because I just don’t want to work that hard.
32. If you could read in a foreign language, which language would you chose?
Well, I can already read in French. If I could choose another language… hmmm, probably Latin/Old French (which yeah, I do classify as another language; I tried reading Old French once and was just like, “WHAT???!”) because I want to read/study medieval literature.
What would be nice is to be able to read a foreign language just when reading something originally written in that language. Like, when you pick up Lolita, you can read Russian (Russian, yeah? I think…); when you pick up Notre Dame de Paris, you can read French. No more reading translations.
34. Most intimidating book you’re too nervous to begin?
A good friend of mine recommended The Count of Monte Cristo. I actually have it on my e-reader, but it’s in French, so I’m like… mehhh, I’m terrified to actually start it. But it will probably be something I at least attempt to tackle on the plane.
E.E. Cummings. I don’t actually read that much poetry anymore, so I’m pretty much limited to the poets I studied in high school (and French poets that I studied in college), but E.E. Cummings has always stuck out as one of my favorites, and I plan to get a tattoo of a line of one of his poems, so…
38. Favorite fictional character?
Katniss Everdeen. I’m going with girl power today… Katniss is just such a strong character, and not just because she kills people, but because she’s well-rounded. She gets angry, she makes bad choices sometimes, she feels emotions, but tries to tune them out because if she gives in to them, she will just completely fall apart. And she does it all out of love for her sister.
39. Favourite fictional villain?
Frollo. And to understand this, you really have to read the book. The Disney movie (obviously) doesn’t do it justice, and even the French musical adaption Notre Dame de Paris (which is freaking EXCELLENT, by the way) doesn’t delve into Frollo. But when you read the book, you actually start to feel sympathy for him. Like, yeah, he pretty much turns into a nutso creeper who actually turns to the occult and black magic, but the story delves deeper into who he was when he was younger, and he actually started off as a pretty good guy, and then life just got to him and he turned. So yeah, he’s probably my favorite because he’s just got such a rich story.
42. Name a book that you could/would not finish.
So I mentioned earlier that I was reading the Wheel of Time series. I haven’t been able to finish it. I got about 5 or 6 books in and got so pissed off by the sexist microaggressions that I just had to put it down. My ex assures me that the overall theme isn’t sexist, and that it’s actually quite the opposite, but my interpretation so far is something quite different. And maybe, yeah, it gets better later on, but I just reached a point where I got so angry that I had to put it down. Maybe I’ll go back to it later, but I at least needed a break.
44. Favorite film adaptation of a novel?
I’m holding out for The Fault in Our Stars. Otherwise, so far I’ve really enjoyed the Hunger Games movies.
45. Most disappointing film adaptation?
Ella Enchanted. They had SO MUCH POTENTIAL. And they royally fucked it up. So hard. Don’t get me wrong, the movie on its own is amusing, but as an adaption it’s fucking dreadful.
 52. Name a book that made you angry.
hahaha, 50 Shades of Grey (and ensuing trilogy). I read this on my e-reader, and so I kept making little notes. The one I used most often was “Are you fucking kidding me?!” (and variations like, “Are you FUCKING kidding me?!” “ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME?!” “Are you fucking KIDDING ME?!”).
I have officially renamed the series:
50 Shades of Are You Fucking Kidding Me?
50 Shades of Fucking Stupid
50 Shades of …*Sigh*…Smh
53. A book you didn’t expect to like but did?
I read Gray by Pete Wentz last year. I wasn’t expecting NOT to like it, but I mostly just read it because I was kind of curious. But I ended up connecting to it more than I thought I would, and therefore quite liked it. I mean, it’s not the best literature available; it’s not even the best STORY; but it was an interesting study of human nature and mental illness, I think.
