Request for Kakuriyo: Bed and Breakfast for spirits, and the master is a yandere! Reader is in place of Aoi and is incredibly resistant and set on not marrying him but he refuses to let her go back to her realm or leave him.
I am a bit rusty but I hope you like it. I want to practice writing Odanna a bit more, as he is quite hard to write but I love the Yandere vibe.
The parlor was thick with the scent of old wood and the lingering smell of the bento Aoi had offered to the Ogre. It still smelled the same as the ones used to make Shiro made. The man himself was gone, but his enormous presence had been replaced by one infinitely more formidable- the presences of long suffering pain. His troubles may be over but yours had only just began, the bills and fines where now squarely on the shoulders. He may be gone but his debt wasn’t in both in the Human Realm and here, it would seem.
You and Aio stood before the Ōdanna, the master of the Tenjin-ya, your spine ramrod straight. He was a mountain of a man, clad in black and red, his horns curving sharply above his dark hair. His eyes, ruby red, were fixed on you, calculating and predatory. When he looked at you, it was as though the air itself bowed beneath his will. There was hunger there too, subtle but undeniable. His subordinates lining the tables with their masks and sneers.
“The debt,” the Ōdanna’s voice was a low rumble, devoid of emotion, “is unforgivable. Your grandfather’s carelessness has earned him my patience for too long. In lieu of the coin, the contract is clear: I claim the granddaughter as my bride.”
He gestured toward the petite figure trembling slightly behind you. Aoi was pale, her grip on your sleeve tight. The corners of his lips lifted faintly, he enjoyed her fear. He enjoyed the power it gave him. Vile.
You felt a familiar cold logic settle over your fear. Shiro had been a fool, and defying a spirit, ogre no less, even a deeply indebted one, was a death wish. They would eat you up without hesitation.
You stepped fully in front of Aoi, dropping the hand you’d been holding. Your own hands, though trembling subtly, were clasped neatly at your waist. You met the Ōdanna’s terrifying gaze without flinching.
“Sir,” you began, your voice steady, “with all due respect, your contract names ‘Shiro Tsubaki’s heir’ as the collateral. Shiro had no sons. I am however his adopted daughter. Legally, culturally, and in the eyes of the Human Realm, Aoi is his last living blood relative a granddaughter. I will not argue that, but as a daughter I am the heir of his estate. even if I am not blood”
The Ōdanna raised a single eyebrow, his expression still unreadable. A flicker of something, perhaps curiosity or amusement, danced in his golden eyes. He tilted his head slightly, as if studying the fine details of a rare treasure.
You continued, pushing through the suffocating aura of his power, “Aoi is an innocent girl, barely out of school. She cannot pay the debt, nor is she responsible for her grandfather’s recklessness. I am the one who kept Shiro’s affairs in order, the one who cleans up his messes. I can do that here.” You took a breath and plunged forward. “I am also the one who is offering a far better alternative. Take me instead.”
Aoi gasped behind you, but you ignored it. “No! You can’t!” she cried, clutching your sleeve again.
Ōdanna’s gaze sharpened, his pupils narrowing like a predator’s. Slowly, deliberately, he rose from where he sat. The air trembled around him. Each step toward you echoed through the room, heavy and controlled, until he stood close enough for you to feel the chill of his power crawl across your skin. His scent was smoke, cedar, and something sweet.
“I will stay in Tenjin-ya, willingly. I will work in any capacity you deem fit, day and night, until the full amount of the debt is paid off. I possess spirit magic. I can be an asset. If having a human bride is a sign of status, surely having a servant with that kind of magic will be so too. I am willing to serve to right the wrong of Shiro, but I will not be your bride. I will not be your wife. My offer is one of servitude and labor, not marriage. The moment the debt is cleared, I return to the Human Realm, and Aoi is left untouched, free of any claim.”
A long, heavy silence descended. The Ōdanna’s gaze pierced you. You could feel his power pressing on you, a warning, a demand for submission. Your breath hitched as the air grew heavier. His voice, when it came, was soft, too soft. “You presume to dictate terms to an Ogre God.”
“I presume to offer the only path where you gain a profit, not just a liability,” you countered, your voice dropping slightly, the pragmatism in your tone unwavering. “I know what Shiro owed. I am willing to work for it. A girl forced into a marriage she doesn’t want will only be trouble. A worker willing to toil for her freedom will be productive.”
The corners of his lips curved into a slow, unsettling smile that didn’t reach his eyes. It was the smile of a predator who had just spotted his prey. “Productive,” he repeated, testing the word. His gaze slid from your face, down your form, lingering too long, before returning to your eyes. “A fascinating proposal. No marriage, you say? Very well, adopted daughter of Shiro. You will stay in Kakuriyo, and you will labor at Tenjin-ya. ”
He leaned forward slightly, his breath brushing your ear, his tone dipped with amusement and something darker. “I accept your terms, but with my own conditions.”
Your chest tightened, but you gave a curt nod. “State them.”
“You will not leave the grounds of Tenjin-ya without my express permission. You will not communicate with the Human Realm. You will follow my orders explicitly. And you are mine to keep will the contract is fulfilled.” His voice dropped, velvet and dangerous. “You may work for your freedom, but do not mistake this for liberty, little human. You will never go home till I am satisfied. Not until I decide you are done with me and the debt. And I suspect that will be a very, very long time indeed. And if you so much as breach the terms, I will take you as a bride.”
He leaned closer still, his red eyes glowing faintly in the dim light, voice a near whisper. “You say you don’t wish to be my bride, but in the end…” his smile deepened, sharp as a blade, “…all things bound to me eventually become mine. One way or another.”
A shiver ran down your spine as his shadow enveloped you. The air around you pulsed like it was alive, your felt Aoi grip the back of your shirt and hold you closer, like it might be for the last time.
“I accept,” you managed, though your throat felt dry.
Ōdanna’s smile widened, almost gentle now, almost. “Good girl,” he murmured, his voice a low, dangerous purr. “Then we understand each other perfectly.”

This anime is good in the sense that we have handsome guys and beautiful girls and yet the characters are complex and it contains lots of pacifist messages. I am happy this gem is recognised as a gem.
Ugh 😩 the animation is just so not what I was hoping for. And the story isn’t that much better since the line delivery is terrible with the poor animating. The characters just look so…stiff and not anatomically correct in many ways, their hair doesn’t move, their faces are odd angles and shapes and they just sit, move and stand in ways that don’t look right.
I hate whining when I was so excited to see this show come back but come on, we’re way past animation of this quality, even some of the worse isekai feels like it has better character design than this. Once again the food and scenery is more beautiful and stands out past the characters which is shouldn’t but I think that’s part of the issue, the studio seems to do better with static imagery than movement and the food / scenery images are all static so it’s basically just art at that point vs doing real animation.
With the plot, I haven’t read the source material so this may be completely accurate but I feel like Aoi is just kind of…there. She doesn’t have any real drive or presence besides “oh someone wanted nuts coked for the party, guess I’ll go” like okay, that was awkward, not like someone couldn’t just cook nuts themselves? Her contributions to conversation is just parroting what the person just said (marriage? She is? Huh?) and not having much meaningful to say.
As for Odanna, looking 15 now is doing his character no favors. Him reminiscing about Kasuga being like a granddaughter to him is weird when he looks like he does now with the animation 😬, I need the mature-looking version back or these lines just seem very out of place. Not to mention the butchering of the romance when he tries to flirt because he looks like a juvenile. And the farmers outfit with his horns stupidly sticking out of the hat?? Yeah, that kind of ruined the whole intense marriage / emotional conversation he and Aoi have at the fountain. I just can’t picture him as the alluring, mysterious ayakashi they want him to be when he looks like that.
I’m not sure I’ll continue with the series which is a shame because I want so much to like it but honestly it’s already cringe with just the second episode and while I hate using that word I don’t have much of a better descriptor for it. Maybe if the plot finally picks up I’ll be more invested…

Not my best work, but I wanted to share since this anime has stolen my heart since I finished it - it definitely isn’t animated the best, but the story and especially that OST make up for it!
The flowers around them are meant to be Camellia flowers, since they’re associated with Aoi pretty often in the anime. I also found out that in China, the Camellia flower is said to represent the love of a couple - with the flower petals representing the woman, and the plant/leaves representing the man (or at least that’s what I’ve found online). So it’s might be referencing that, since Odanna has green fire and dark green in his coat, while Aoi is referenced alongside the flower of camellias and even the ED references them alongside Aoi. It may be a coincidence tho, I just think it’s cool!
I also gave Odanna some bigger horns, cause I’m still a little salty that they’re so small in the anime and illustrations. I think the design is good overall, I just think the show shies a bit too much away from the inhuman elements in many of the Ayakashi designs.
