Between the bright ocean surface and the deep, dark sea lies the ocean twilight zone, also known as the mesopelagic zone.

Only a small amount of sunlight reaches this layer, yet it supports an extraordinary variety of life, including lanternfish, squid, jellyfish, and microscopic organisms.

Many twilight zone animals migrate toward the surface at night to feed and return to deeper water during the day. This daily movement also helps transport carbon into the deep ocean, making the twilight zone an important part of Earth’s ocean ecosystem.

Far below the sunlit ocean, cold seeps form where methane, hydrogen sulfide, and other chemicals slowly escape from the seafloor.

Specialized microbes turn these chemicals into energy through chemosynthesis. This process supports mussels, tube worms, crabs, clams, and other deep sea organisms, creating thriving ecosystems in complete darkness.

Deep beneath the ocean lies one of nature’s strangest environments: brine pools. These underwater lakes contain water far saltier and denser than the surrounding sea.

Because many brine pools have very little oxygen and contain toxic chemicals, animals that enter them may quickly die. However, bacteria, mussels, worms, and other specialized organisms thrive around their edges, forming remarkable deep-sea communities.

When a whale dies and sinks to the seafloor, its body becomes the foundation of an entire deep-sea community. This natural process is known as a whale fall.

Scavengers first feed on the soft tissue. Later, smaller organisms use the remaining bones and nutrients for food and shelter. A single whale fall can support marine life for decades, turning an empty patch of seafloor into a thriving ecosystem.

Far below the sunlit surface, the deep ocean receives a steady shower of organic material known as marine snow. It includes plankton remains, waste, mucus, and other tiny particles.

Although it may look like underwater dust, marine snow provides food for deep-sea organisms and transports carbon from surface waters into the ocean’s depths. This process helps connect life at the surface with ecosystems thousands of metres below.
