Cold seeps are places throughout the global ocean where chemicals like hydrogen sulfide, methane, and other...
"How do Seeps Form?
Scientists think that some cold seeps may have existed for thousands of years and that there are thousands of seep sites throughout the ocean. To date, cold seeps have been discovered in every ocean basin (at depths less than 50 meters [160 feet] and depths greater than 200 meters [660 feet]), occurring most frequently along continental margins, where coastal continental crust transitions into deeper oceanic crust. They are found at both tectonically active margins, where the transition from continental to oceanic plate occurs at a tectonic plate boundary, and at passive continental margins, where the transition from continental to oceanic plate is not located along the edge of a tectonic plate."
Facts about ocean plastics:
1) Sperm-Whale:
A dead sperm- whale was found ashore with plastic in its stomach; including 115 drinking cups, 25 plastic bags, plastic bottles, two flip-flops and a bag containing more than 1,000 pieces of string ( weighing 13.2 pound,six kilograms).
2) Fishing nets:
Every year there’s an estimate of 640,000 tons fishing nets in the ocean, this being a large part of pollution.
3) whale dies after swallowing 6 square metres of plastic:
August 2000, an eight metre Bryde's whale died after being stranded on a beach. it’s stomach was filled with 6 m2 of plastic, including many plastic check-out bags.
4) 'Lucky' the platypus rescued:
May 2003, a Platypus was rescued with a plastic bag wrapped around it, cutting into the body. However, it was deemed to be okay and set free.
These are only some of the issues with plastic in the ocean. Over 1 million marine animals die from plastic in the sea each year.
A first step in product design is to develop a product that does not use #plastic materials. Eliminate the source of plastic and you eliminate at least the ongoing supply. The problem of cleaning up the existing mess remains.

Driftnets
Illegal driftnets in the Mediterranean Sea form a major hazard to dolphins, whales, turtles, sharks and fish. The use of driftnets has been banned by the United Nations for over 20 years, yet an estimated 500 vessels from Morocco, France, Italy, Turkey, Algeria and Tunisia continue to use them, killing an estimated 10.000 whales and dolphins every year, as well as thousands of endangered sharks, sea turtles and fish.
