Tayena is loved and sheltered elder daughter of the noble Viogor family, ruler of knezhevina [kneh-zheh-wee-nah] Trnogorye for the last 45 years. She is dutiful and highly respected young woman who is very loyal to her family, especially to her father.  

Trnogorye has never been led by a woman and Tayena is meant to be the first. As such, she was brought up unlike any other girl in her land. Ever since the day of her birth, she has been treated, dressed and educated as a boy, a future sovereign, and trained to be a warrior. Her younger sister, on the other hand, has been free to express her feminine side, and that causes discontent in Tayena’s heart.

Despite her formidable fighting skills and sharp wits, she is restricted from ever leaving Wolkobran, the city of her birth, until she succeeds her father. Consequently, she barely experienced anything outside her castle walls and is curious about the world. Still, Tayena understands her parents decision to protect her, the sole heir of the land, at all costs, and she accepts her station.

There is, however, one bewildering and tormenting event that repeated throughout Tayena’s life. On certain nights wolves approach Wolkobran close enough for her to hear their howls. Their haunting cries cause her pain and she is inexplicably drawn to them. No one has been able to explain her peculiar condition.
