Authorâs notes: This is just how itâs gonna be now. I think I just write better at night plus mental illness makes it hard for me to do things at a normal time so /shrug. This one really isnât great at all and itâs short as hell but I wanted to write something at least. It seems like I go good day, bad day, good day, bad day etc. but whatever. Here it is: a really short piece with Mathus and Aldric taking place sometime during SS: Part 1.Â
Word count: 632
âI can feel you staring,â Aldric spoke, glancing up from the paperwork occupying his desk. Over his glasses, he saw his boyfriend shoot him a look of fake exasperation before leaning up against the door frame of the office.
âYouâve been at that for hours now,â Mathus sighed, crossing his arms over his chest. âMaybe you should take a break.â
âI would love to,â Aldric responded, returning his attention back to his paperwork. He huffed after realizing that heâd lost his place in reading. âBut thereâs just too much information here for me not to take as much time as I can to study it properly.â
âThe trialâs not for another two weeks, though.â
Mathus understood well enough that Aldric was very dedicated to his jobâit was was one of the things that he loved most about him; however, he wasnât too keen on the man needlessly exhausting himself almost constantly. Heâd spend countless hours pouring over papers and files, insistent on memorizing each and every detail, usually at the expense of proper sleep. Mathus would assure him consistently that his skill and intelligence were more than enough to carry him through a case without routinely burning the candle at both ends, but that typically fell on deaf ears.
âIâm aware, love,â Aldric said, sighing as he began to flip through one of the files atop his desk, seemingly searching for something specific. If there was an order to the chaos of paperwork, Mathus couldnât see it. âBut I need to ensure that Iâm fully prepared.â
âIs it that bad?â
Again, Aldric sighed, giving up his search and removing his glasses to run his hands over his face. Without them, Mathus could see just how tired Aldric truly looked. His eyes were heavy and reddened, and the ponytail keeping his hair off of his face was starting to come undone. There was a mug on the table that Mathus could guess was empty, knowing his boyfriendâs habits fairly well when it came to his work.
âA double homicide intertwined with several instances of blackmail, embezzlement, and enough unreliable witnesses to have at least 8 separate accounts of what actually happened?â Aldric ranted, frustration bleeding through his tone. âNo, itâs practically a walk in the park.â
âGotcha,â Mathus nodded, knowing that his boyfriendâs frustrations werenât necessarily aimed at him intentionally. Heâd get back at him with well intentioned overbearingness. âBut you should still take a break every now and then. Thatâs how proper studying works anyway.â
âOh? Are you an expert?â
âNo, but I bet you canât even tell me what the hell the last few things youâve read are even about,â Mathus smirked, leveling Aldric with a knowing look.
When he received no response aside from an annoyed huff, Mathus knew he was right and approached the desk to start gathering everything into a neat pile which he then set aside. When Aldric didnât even protest, the brunet then rounded the desk, spinning his boyfriend in his chair and pulling him to his feet. Aldric knew to simply cede by that point, allowing himself to be led out of the office. Mathus shut the door behind him, gently shoving Aldric forward through the house towards their bedroom. The exhaustion of the night weighed down on him quickly and calling it an evening started to seem like a smart move.
âIâll have to be up early to start reviewing it all again,â Aldric pointed out, failing to keep the snark out of his voice. Mathus merely rolled his eyes, not gracing him with a response until the two were finally in bed together.
âWell, considering that I locked the office from the inside and am the only one who knows where the key is, let me know how that works out for you.â
Authorâs Notes: I wanted to write this so bad that I actually did it on time, guys. Itâs just a piece about Mathus obsessing over every single little detail before his wedding (ft. little bits of Cheeky, Pierce, and Buggie!), but Iâm actually really really happy with it because I love writing about my fire boy and his poisonous lawyer husband (even though Aldric doesnât appear in this because I decided to torture Mathus for once). But yeah, itâs on time and Iâm happy with it! Whoâd have thought!Â
Word count: 1,217
âAnd youâre sure it all came in?â Mathus asked for what was probably the twelfth time. He could visibly see just how much he was beginning to irritate Cheeky if the twitch of their eyebrows and continuous sighing was anything to go by. Evidently, he was grating on Pierceâs nerves as well considering just how roughly the archer was pulling on his hair while trying to will it into an acceptable style. However, it was more likely that his fidgeting was the problem rather than his nagging.
âI counted it five times like you asked, your highness,â Cheeky answered, snickering at the glare they received. âAll three-hundred flowers, potted in cream marble and ribboned with bows colored hex code number âfour seven zero zero nine A.ââ
âIf youâre going to be a smartass, you shouldâve gone through naming all of the flowers too,â Mathus responded, decidedly unamused by Cheekyâs mocking. He shot them another glare after they giggled at Pierce scolding Mathus to sit still.
âWeâd all be late for the damn wedding at that point,â Cheeky countered before shaking their head with a sigh. âLook, I promise everythingâs in order. Iâm pretty sure Buggie would have my head otherwise.â
The sorcerer promptly left the bedroom before Mathus was able to kick them out. The brunet settled, willing himself to remain as still as possible as Pierce finally finished styling his hair.
âPlease donât mess it up,â Pierce sighed, almost knowing the request would be in vain.
âIâll do my best,â Mathus promised, looking himself over in the mirror. He wasnât completely dressed yet, still missing his suit jacket, tie, socks and shoes, but he figured that he didnât look half bad. His suit fit him nicely, hugging his form well and showing off his nice buildâTerion made sure of that, stating that she would not let him look anything less than âformally sexy,â as she put it. And Pierce did a great job with his mess of hair, neatly slicking it back but letting it keep some of its natural curl; Mathus had to guess that was because the archer became frustrated with trying to get it completely straight. He hoped, once put completely together, that heâd make a good groom for his husband to be.
âMr. Dioxin,â a quiet, recognizable voice spoke behind him. He turned to see one of the kitchen staff members standing in the door way looking rather nervous. âYouâre needed in the kitchen.â
âWhy?â Mathus asked, perhaps a little too harshly given the servantâs slightly wince. He quickly apologized with a sigh. âIâm sorry, Theo. Whatâs the problem?â
âIâm not sure,â came the meek reply. âThe cook asked me to bring you to the kitchen whenever possible.â
With another sigh, Mathus nodded, promising Pierce heâd be as quick as possible to keep him from having a fit. He follow the servant down to the kitchen, having to stop along the way several times in order to answer what felt like one thousand questions from various different people. He was sure Eleazar was going to get him back later for being so short with him, but that would be a problem for later him. Later, married him.
Mathus knew he was being obsessive over every single little detail but he couldnât bring himself to stop. He was hoping heâd get a pass, or several, considering it was his wedding day. Evidently that wouldnât be the case with some as he had to be physically pulled from the kitchen by Terion for micromanaging so much that even the cook threatened to beat him with a ladle.
âWould you let the woman work, Mathus?â Terion chided, sighing as she watched Mathus begin to pace.
âI just needed to make sure everything would be ready on time,â he defended, trying to peek another glance into the kitchen. However, Terion blocked his view with her body, her hands on her hips and her wings spread wide. âThe weddingâs in two hours.â
âI know that, Peppers.â The Bacterial did feel sympathy for her friend, his anxiety noticeably surging through him. She tried to take his hand in an attempt to stop his nervous pacing, but his skin was incredibly hot to the touch. Instead, she leveled him with an understanding look and kept her tone gentle. âBut everythingâs fine. Iâm making damned sure of it.âÂ
âI know, Iâm sorry, I just...I never thought Iâd ever get married and now Iâm less than two hours away from marrying the man Iâve been so stupidly in love with for five whole years,â Mathus started, reaching up to almost run a hand through his hair before stopping himself after realizing that Pierce would actually skin him for it. Instead, he began to ring his hands continuously in time with his pacing. âGod, heâs just made me so happy and I love him so much. I need this to be perfect for him like heâs made everything for me.â
âMathus, that is so incredibly sweet,â Terion said, her eyes beginning to visibly water. âBut Iâm gonna need you to stop because Iâve been on the verge of tears all day and Iâd really like to save it for the ceremony because once I start, Iâm not going to be able to stop.â
âOkay,â Mathus chuckled almost breathlessly, not being able to keep a small smile from forming at just how emotional Terion was getting. His nerves were still eating at him, but his little rant succeeded in reminding him just what the day was really about. He was getting married to the love of his life with his family there to see it and by god, he really couldnât wait.Â
âOh, but I just canât believe my two best friends are getting married,â Terion sniffed, almost reading Mathusâs mind. She reached up to cradle Mathusâs face in her hands, her smile wobbly and sincere. âI still remember when I couldnât stand either of you.â
At that, Mathus laughed loudly, taking Terionâs hands in his own and leaning forward to gently kiss her on the forehead. âThank you, Bug. For this. For everything youâve done for us.â
âStop it! If you make me really cry right now, Iâm going to hit you.â Terion gently shoved him away, fanning her face and taking quick, short breaths. âBesides, if this wedding is anything less than perfect, Iâm going to kill whoever is responsible.â
âAlright, alright,â Mathus ceded with another laugh, knowing full well that she wasnât entirely joking with that last bit. âI better go finish getting ready before Pierce has another fit and pulls out my hair for me.â
âHeâs taking his roll of assistant planner very seriously and I couldnât be more proud,â Terion chuckled. âBut, yes, go finish getting ready for godâs sake. You look ridiculous without shoes on.â
With that, the Bacterial turned Mathus around and shoved him forward down the hall as he huffed out a quick, âOkay, okay!â She watched him lightly jog back towards his room with a bright grin on her face, feeling the excitement in her heart impossibly double. The wedding would be absolutely perfect even if she did have to kill someone for it. Terion had promised that to both Mathus and Aldric the moment they announced their engagement and she fully intended to deliver.
