The Batch Family: The Haircut
Crosshair makes a bold decision for a petty reason.
Part of my AU “The Batch Family” [Collection Masterlist]
Word count: 900 | Batch ages: Kids (11 y/o)
Note: Still trying to find a rhythm with writing. I'll be working off of this October prompt list. Already off to a great start, one day behind. LOL, oh well.
* * *
Boy oh boy, was Crosshair mad. He sat hunched in the back seat, arms crossed firmly over his chest and a frown pulling the features of his otherwise youthful face down into a sag. No one else in the car dared talk to him in this state. That was fine with him. He wasn't in the mood to talk. Not when he was stewing on his feelings and all the ideas they brought.
They were heading home from a visit to Grandma and Grandpa's house. It had been a while since their last trip, as the start of school kept them too busy to do much else. This meant their lack of a recent haircut really stood out to their grandparents. Hunter had always had longer hair - he'd throw a fit when their mom tried to do more than a little trim - but the other boys were fine with more regular haircuts. The problem was Crosshair's hair had seemed to grow faster than the others'. So he received the brunt his Grandma's fixation.
So shaggy! she'd cooed while ruffling his hair, several times throughout the day.
And then, just when they were about to leave, she'd added... You'll look just like Hunter soon!
That had been the final straw. Crosshair had swatted at her hand, and was then promptly grounded.
[OCs] A bunch of doodles of some really old OCs that I hadn't drawn in years!

You've been visited by the random OC question fairy! :D ~☆
Does your character share any characteristics/traits with you? Was this intentional?
Fae! Thank goodness you’re here! @random-oc-questions-fairy :D ☆
Coming Of Age OC Beth is alternate reality parallel universe me, a few years older and more sure of herself, more graceful. Her cafe job is going well, her found family relationships are strong. It’s absolutely intentional.
Coming Of Age OC Everett is the artistic old soul, with quick wit. He does puns like nobody's business, and he has a rhyme anytime, and Beth is… well, Beth is swept away by him. Entranced.
Everything changes during the semester fire drill at school. Does everything fall apart... or fall into place?

She smokes naked on the balcony because Maria doesn’t like the smell. The wind carries the acrid cloud off onto the plains and out over the world until it dissipates without ceremony. Beth watches it happen, her red hair gently brushing over her skin, tickling against her collarbones and drifting over her breasts. She takes great pleasure in the sight - it reminds her of how small she is, how little moments can matter. The comfort that sight gives her is something she doesn’t quite know how to express.
Beth lets her lungs blow take in the cigarette smoke and holds it within her, feels the lightness in her head and the shiver of cool breeze that makes her toes curl. She lets the air out again, eyes tracking the white-grey cloud as it is taken from her.
In the bedroom, Maria is asleep. Her body is warm, the sweat from their lovemaking dry and a thing of the past. That warmth calls to Beth from somewhere deep inside her, what her father might call her soul. She takes one last drag and lets her gaze fall on the horizon this time.
The sun is setting. It is a heavy dome falling under the land. Some days she can feel that other call, the call of freedom out in the world without ties to her father’s shop or her mother’s wishes, but for now...
“Come back to bed,” Maria murmurs behind her, blanket wrapped about her shoulders and fingers reaching out to take Beth’s free hand. “It’ll get cold soon.”
Beth turns and smiles at her. She smiles at the cowlick poking up from Maria’s crown, at the drool on the corner of her mouth, at the grumpy twist of her lips when she catches the smell of the cigarette for a moment.
“Okay, I’ll only be a moment.”
For now Maria is with her. And that is more than enough.
