Kasey should be enjoying the warm weather with the rest of the guys. Florida had a lot to offer that was out of the ordinary. He could see if some of the guys wanted to go find an open rooftop to have dinner. Night swim in the outdoor pool. They were all planning a beach day for tomorrow. He should be enjoying himself.
Instead, all he seemed to be able to do was wait for dark red hair and brown eyes to appear around the next corner.
Finn still made him jump sometimes. Caught out of the corner of Kaseyâs eye, he was a ghost.
Kasey tilted his face up to the warm shower spray and let the roar of the water fill his ears.
Airport kisses and that way city lights blurred through rainy cab windows. Never thought of such a bustling city as a hometown before but, back in New York, with Alex, it had felt like one. Somehow.
Heâd just secured a towel around his waist, wiping the mirror clear of steam when a knock on his door muffled its way through the room.
Dumo, maybe, about dinner, or Finn and Logan.
Another round of knocking, two fists on the door, a mess of it. Finn and Logan, then.
But the knocking didnât stop. If anything they picked up their pace. Sharp taps that formed some sort of pattern, bum-bum-ba-bum. It had Kasey rolling his eyes and walking out of the bathroom fast to yank open his hotel room door.
âJesus, guys, Iâmââ
Not Finn and Logan. Kasey wasnât sure what he was feeling. Cold from the hallwayâs AC, or warm all over fromâ
âAlex,â he said. Because, yeahâAlex. Standing in the hallway with a big OâHara grin on his faceâhard to look at Finn when he did itâand wearing navy shorts and a white t-shirt. Stupid tan boat shoes and no socks. God.
âHi, Winter.â
Kasey just stared at him. Too much. From just thinking, worrying, wondering about seeing him, to all of him right here. Kaseyâs hand went to the band of his towel, low on his hips. Heâd thought heâd been waving Finn and Logan off to let him get ready notânot standing in front ofâ
âWhat are youâdoing? Hi. WhatâŚâ
Alex made a big show of frowning, like heâd forgotten. Tapped the pockets of his shorts like heâd lost something before slipping his hands inside.
âI meanâŚâ Alex leaned against the doorway. âPretty sure Iâm about to take you to dinner. So.â
Kasey had some type of stone ruin in his chest, Alexâs, that crumbled just a little more at the way he talked.
Alexâs eyes flicked down to his waist, the towelâs fragile tie around Kaseyâs hips. âIs that what youâre wearing?â That stupid poke of his tongue in the corner of his mouth as he smiled. âDamn. Now I feel overdressed.â

Pls literally anything O'Darwin I love them sm ive reerad practiclly every O'darwin microfic i can find (no pressure obvi) Im also biased toward hurt/comfort and angst bcs i am addicted to angst but if its O'Darwin i dont mind tbh
I started writing hurt/ comfort, then that beautiful @lumosinlove art came out, so it transformed into sweeter moving-day fluff instead. Oops? Blame it on Hazel for making Alex so gorgeously tragic. I had to throw him a bone!
âYou know you donât have to do that.â
It wasnât a question, and Alex didnât take it as oneâjust smiled at him, a little out of breath, and stepped sideways around the kitchen island to drop the box on the floor by the couch. He radiated heat when he passed behind Kasey with a squeeze to his shoulders and a kiss to the top of his head. Short and sharp, sweetened by the tang of sweat. Kasey watched him half-jog back into the hallway. Hockey looked good on Alex. It always had. The media called them twins but he was so much bigger than Finn, thick in the shoulders and waist and thighs. Finn didnât fight because he had a knight two steps behind him. Alex didnât fight because everyone else knew heâd win.
âAl,â Kasey called at the next small huff of effort. âCome on.â
âRight here, baby.â That smile. Goddamn. Kasey crossed his arms over his chest to trap the flutter inside.
âGive meââ He checked his phone. âFive minutes. For the sake of your back if nothing else.â
âNo can do, sugar-sweets.â Alex left the box on the countertop, though, and was at his side in moments. The freckles on his knuckles stood out when he braced his hands on the back of the couch and leaned over Kasey. Sweaty, indeed. It darkened his shirt and the roots of his hair, still a little longer than he usually liked it. His kiss was brief and hard. âMwah. Two more boxes.â
âLet me help you.â
âKase.â Alex knelt on one knee. His fingers found Kaseyâs hair; his eyes flickered dragonfly-fast over Kaseyâs face. âKasey Winter, Winter Kasey, the most beautiful brick wall in the league and love of my fuckinâ life. No.â
âWhy?â
âHmm, letâs think about that one.â Alex widened his eyes for a moment, teasing, and he swept his index finger down Kaseyâs nose until he wrinkled it. âMy loverâs moving in, heâs got a bum leg, and Iâm in the best shape Iâve ever been in. Three strikes, youâre out.â
âIf you give me five minutesâfour, nowââ
âYou will still be my lover, who is still moving into my apartment.â Alex tucked his hair behind his ear and scuffed his thumb against Kaseyâs cheek on the way. Impossibly gentle. Everything about Alex had always felt impossible. âLet me do this,â he murmured. âBoyfriends are supposed to do the heavy lifting, right? Move all your shit in for you, âcause itâs my place and I want you here?â
âEighty percent of that is Natâs.â
âYeah, but youâre the one that gets to look at my muscles while I do it.â Alex tapped his nose again. âLet me boyfriend, winterlong. Iâm good at it.â
Kasey arched a brow. âYour job is boyfriend?â
âMy job is boyfriend,â Alex said, solemn as the grave. âStanley-Cup-winning, MVP boyfriend. Iâm the best boyfriend youâve ever had.â
Kasey bit his smile into the inside of his cheek and knew Alex saw it by the glimmer of his eyes. âYouâre the only boyfriend Iâve ever had.â
âThatâs what I like to hear.â
Kasey hooked his finger in a hole at the neckline of Alexâs shirt. Heâd chew on them while he scrolled his phone, sometimes. Absolutely insane. Kasey had never seen Finn do that even once. âYou really, really donât need to move all my boxes for me.â
Alex squinted at him. âMmmm, yeah, pretty sure I do.â
âYou donât.â
âI wanna.â He dashed a kiss to the inside of Kaseyâs wrist. âI love ya. I want to go lift heavy things for my boy and my girl so they can live in my house forever and ever and ever.â
âAnd ever?â
âAnd ever. I havenât told you the best part yet.â
âOh?â
âMy boyfriend objectifies me when I lift heavy things for him.â Slowly, tenderly, Alex took Kaseyâs hoodie sleeve between his teeth. His pointed canines flashed.
Kasey narrowed his eyes. âI donât think he does that.â
âHe does. I can tell. Heâs really, really bad at hiding things.â
âHmm.â
âHe also joins me in the shower when Iâm done.â
Kasey gave his shoulder two sturdy thumps, then dragged his hand through thick red waves with the kind of pressure that made Alex grin. His copper eyelashes flashed in the afternoon light. Outside, a car horn blared. Heâd missed it. Heâd missed all of this so, so much. âTwo boxes. Get moving.â
(Many hours later, in a bed that smelled so perfectly and entirely of Alex, when Natalie was home and broken-down boxes laid haphazard by the door to be taken out tomorrow, Kasey laid his head on Alexâs chest and felt his heart hammering despite the evenness of his breathing. He wove their fingers together and gave two quick squeezes. What-what? The point of Alexâs nose nuzzled the top of his head. He squeezed back, long and hard, drawing his opposite hand along the curve of Natalieâs back where she slumbered against him. Kasey felt the shape of two words against his forehead. All mine.)
I've enjoyed a nice break, and I hope you all have as well. I am working my way through more prompts and things, but decided to take part in Nootmas, put on by @noots-fic-fests! I'm a little late, but better late than never, I guess.
Part I of this two-part story draws from the "Christmas surprise" and "warm" prompts, and the entire story centers around the sweet and iconic O'Hara brothers! It's loosely inspired by some music I was listening to a while ago whilst I was studying, namely Orange Juice by the one and only Noah Kahan, She Lit a Fire and Meet Me In the Woods by Lord Huron, and flowers-fire by Kingfishr, so take a listen if you have a moment!
Thanks to @noots-fic-fests for the prompt ideas and @lumosinlove for the lovely characters!
October 2002
âGet in, loser!â
Kasey gave Alex the slightest smile through the open passenger door window. His eyes were half lidded and droopy, as they had been since August. Mr. Winterâs funeral had left a shadow over all of them, but over nobody more than Kasey, even though he and his dad had been rocky at the best of times. At least this time his clothes looked clean and fresh, Alex thought, not covered in dirt or leaves from the copious amount of time he spent smoking in the woods behind his house, as much as he claimed not to. But Alex could always smell the weed on him.
There was no scent of marijuana this time when Kasey sat next to him. Alex closed the passenger window and turned the volume down on the radio, then turned to Kasey. âHey.â
âHey.â Kasey shuffled with his backpack at his feet before finally making eye contact. Alex tried to control the beating of his heart under his gaze, which was always warm for Alex, no matter how shit Kasey was feeling. And he had been feeling pretty shit lately.Â
âI have a plan,â Alex said. âLike, not a massive one. Or a complex one, just⌠letâs go to the Tremblayâs farm, yeah? Finn joins Logan there all the time, thereâs a part with a field. I mean, you can see the stars and shit, itâs pretty nice-â
âAlex,â Kasey chastised, but he was smiling gently. âThat sounds good.â
âYeah?â Alex wasted no time putting his pickup into gear. âGreat, because I wasnât sure if youâd want to go and just, like, sit under the night sky with our feelings and shit, butâŚâ
He saw Kasey shrug out of the corner of his eye. âWe donât have to talk about our feelings.â
âI know, I justâŚâ Alex heaved out a sigh. âOkay. Yeah, okay. We can just- chat. Yeah.â
âWell, we know youâre good at that.â
Alex rolled his eyes, but smiled. And when he turned to look at Kasey briefly- whose hair looked unfairly soft in the street lights- he was smiling back.
***
âYou were right, the stars are pretty here.â
âI told you so.â
Kaseyâs nudge to his knee didnât have any feeling behind it. Alex nudged him back playfully before settling back against the pillows heâd put in his pickup bed, shivering underneath the blanket they were sharing. The wind whistled through the Vermont woods that surrounded the farmland, but it was almost more comforting than creepy. Theyâd been passing whiskey that Alex had smuggled from his dadâs stock back and forth, and it was starting to make their skin flush. Still, Alex shuffled closer to seek out Kaseyâs warmth beside him. âI think the ghosts are out to get us.â
Kasey snorted. âGhosts?â
âYeah. Ghosts of- I donât know who, but ghosts. Theyâre in the woods, canât you hear them?â
âNo, Iâm too busy listening to you talk my ear off.â
Alex flushed and ducked his chin under the blanket. âSorry.â
âDonât be.â Kasey rubbed a hand up Alexâs arm, leaving goosebumps in his wake. âIt helps.â
Alex turned his head away from the sky at that. Kasey didnât like to talk about it. Since Alex had returned to college in September, heâd made the drive from Burlington a couple of times to visit, and called Kasey at least once a week. But still, it was mostly superficial, and Kasey mostly asked Alex questions about his life. Alex didnât know how many ways he could explain how much he hated his calculus class before they ran out of things to talk about.
Although, Alex didnât think heâd ever get tired of talking with Kasey- which was yet another thing they never, ever discussed.
Alex didnât think Kasey regretted kissing him- Alex certainly didnât. He did regret the circumstances, though. Finding Kasey in that random empty storage closet of the funeral home had taken him far too long. Kasey had always taken to hiding when he was emotionally overwhelmed. At their junior prom, heâd been so nervous to dance with his date, Sydney Tremblay, even though they went just as friends, that heâd hid in the coat closet at the venue until Alex went and got him. Sydney ended up hiding out behind the building and making out with a girl named Amelia, anyways, but that wasnât the point. The point was Alex would go looking for Kasey anywhere and everywhere, no matter how long it took to find him. Especially at his fatherâs wake.Â
What he hadnât expected though, when he had gone looking for Kasey that fateful day, was for Kasey to grab him by the face and kiss him so hard he almost fell over.
Alex closed his eyes briefly against the memory. When he opened them again, Kasey was looking at him knowingly, his mouth turned down at the corners.
âKaseâŚâ
âNo.â Kasey shook his head. His voice was shaky. âAl, no, please.â
âKasey.â Alex sat up and leaned to hover over him. âKasey, I just- I just want to make sure youâre alright-â
âIâm fine.â
âLike hell you are.â Alex took a deep breath at the hurt that crossed Kaseyâs face and tried to calm himself. âKasey Winter, you are my best friend, I know when youâre not okay. You dropped out of college, and you love school, and you smoke weed and drink all the fucking time-â
âAlex.â
â-and tonight youâve been taking big sips of whiskey, like, really big, and I know itâs not because you want to get drunk and have fun-â
âAlex.â
â-itâs because youâre sad, Kase, and I canât do anything-â
âAlex!â
Kasey had taken Alexâs face in his hands now and Alex almost stopped breathing. For the first time since his fatherâs funeral, Kasey had tears in his eyes, and his bottom lip was trembling. He looked so tragically beautiful under the stars. Alex felt glued to his spot on the truck bed.
Kasey took a trembling breath and brushed his thumbs under Alexâs eyes. âAl, IâŚâ His gaze dropped briefly to Alexâs mouth. âAlex, I canât.â
âYou can, Kasey, I- I feel so lost if I canât help you.â
âI know,â Kasey whispered. His eyes were darting over Alexâs face now. âI know, Iâm sorry. Iâm so sorry, Alex, I am.â Then suddenly, as though dragged from the depths of his being, Kasey began to cry. âIâm so sorry.â
âSh, no, Kase.â Alex took Kasey tightly in his arms, tucking his face down into his neck and running gentle fingers through his long hair. âSh, no, Kasey, donât be sorry. Donât be sorry, baby-â
He felt Kasey suck in a breath when he did. Alex noticed that his fingers were trembling where they were resting in Kaseyâs hair. He squeezed his eyes shut. Shit.
For a few moments, they were silent and still, just breathing together. Then, slowly, Kasey pulled back. Alexâs hands fell to his shoulders, his thumbs resting just behind Kaseyâs jaw, where he could feel his racing pulse. Kasey licked his lips, then took Alexâs face in his hands once again.
âI know it hurts you. That I canât talk about it.â
Alex shook his head hard. âKase, it doesnât matter if it hurts me-â
âYes it does.â Kaseyâs face was pinched. âYes it does, it does matter that I hurt you, because youâre- youâre myâŚâ He groaned through his teeth frustratedly. âAlex.â
âWhat?â Alex asked. He covered Kaseyâs hands with his own. âWhat, Kasey, what do you need? Anything, Kasey, please-â
He was interrupted by a kiss. It was quick, almost nervous, so at odds with the kisses they had shared in the store room. Kasey pulled back immediately. He was terrified and so small, his tall body hunched and framed by the rear window of the pickup. He looked at Alex pleadingly. âAl.â
Alex wasted no time in taking Kaseyâs face in his own hands, now, and leaning in. He kept his eyes open, gazing into Kaseyâs, until the last possible moment. Then he made sure to kiss Kasey slowly and gently like he deserved. Alexâs body vibrated with the sensation. He felt Kasey shaking, too, attempting to turn the kiss hard and rough. But Alex kept him there, cradling the heart he cared most about in the world in a way it had never been held before, with long draws of their lips. The kiss was salty with both of their tears, and the freezing air was hitting harder now, but it was the best kiss Alex had ever had. Heâd never been in love with anyone heâd ever kissed before.
Suddenly, Kasey pulled back. His face was pale. âFuck.â
Oh, Alex did not like the sound of that. âKase,â he implored.
âOh my God.â Kasey covered his mouth with his hands as more tears fell. âOh my God, no, Alex-â
âIâm sorry,â Alex said hurriedly. âIâm sorry, I shouldnât have, I-â
âNo, Al, I- we canât.â
Alex believed in many things. In hard work, in the power of a hug. He believed that, the longer you knew someone, the easier it would be to find things to talk about. He believed that laughter was the best medicine, and that having a younger brother was the best thing that ever happened to him, and he definitely believed that he was in love with Kasey Winter.
He decidedly did not believe, then, that they couldnât.
âNo,â Alex said firmly. âNo, uh-uh, Kase.â
âWe canât.â
âNo, Kasey, we-â
âI canât.â Kasey was looking at Alex so pleadingly, willing him to understand. âAnd itâs not- itâs not because I donât love you-â
âI love you, too,â Alex interrupted simply. It was simple. He loved Kasey.
Kasey took a moment, bottom lip between his teeth. âAl, itâs because I donât deserve you.â
Perhaps, for the first time in his life, Alex was lost for words. âWhat?â
âAlex,â Kasey began, reaching to take Alexâs hands in his own. âAlex, Iâm a mess. Iâm⌠Iâm so fucked up, and youâre so incredible, and you deserve someone who is just as good as you.â
âTo hell with you saying you arenât good,â Alex implored. He leaned in to look Kasey in the eye. âAnd to hell with what you think I deserve. What I want is you. KaseâŚâ
But Kasey was already shaking his head. âNo, Alex.â
âKase, please-â
âI said no.âÂ
There had only been a handful of times in his life when Alex had ever seen Kasey angry. And maybe he wasnât even angry now, just irritated, but his face shook Alex to his core. This was not his Kasey. This was a boy, barely twenty-one, who was sad, and lost, and so, so beautiful he took Alexâs breath away. He had to try once more.
âKasey, I love-â
âTake me home.âÂ
Kasey dropped Alexâs hands and grabbed the whiskey bottle instead, taking two big swigs. It was almost half gone, and Alex had not even had enough to make himself tipsy, which meant Kasey had been drinking more than his fare share. He winced as he watched Kasey finish his drink, wobbling a bit, even sitting down. Kasey locked eyes with him again, stony and firm.
âI need you to take me home, please, Alex.â
Alex simply nodded, eyeing the whiskey bottle still dangling from Kaseyâs fingers. âOkay.â
***
They hadnât talked since Alex had pulled off of the access road to the Tremblay farm. It was at least a twenty minute drive to the other side of town, where Kasey lived, on a good day, but it took longer in the dark because Alex had to slow down around all the blind corners as they wound through the hilly, forest-lined roads. The only sound was the radio, where Alex had put in an old Talking Heads CD. He and Kasey normally absentmindedly tapped along to the beat, Alex on the steering wheel and Kasey on his own thighs, but now they were silent and still. Kasey was slumped against the passenger door with his eyes closed. His face was flushed from drinking.
The blinker clicked as Alex turned onto the main road. He let out a sigh, looked at Kasey briefly, and gripped the steering wheel tightly between his hands.
âKasey,â he said. âIâm not leaving you like this.â
Kasey didnât even crack an eye open. âItâs not your choice.â
Alex bit his lip hard. Kasey had never talked to him like that. âKasey, we should talk-â
âThere is nothing to say.â
âKase-â
âStop saying my name like that!â Kasey was sitting upright now, eyes angry. His words were slurred. âStop saying my fucking name like that, why the hell canât you just leave me the fuck alone?â
âHey!â Alex hated rising to the bait, but he was irritated now, too. âHey, donât talk to me like that.â He clicked his blinker on and slowed the car down. âI am pulling over and we are figuring this out-â
âNo you are not.â Hands grabbed Alexâs steering wheel and swerved back onto the road.Â
âWhat the hell? Get your hands off-â
âYou are taking me home!â
âThis is dangerous, let go-â
âAlex!â
Alex looked up from fighting with Kaseyâs hands just as they crossed the road. The four deer froze, and so did Alex, a yell caught in his throat. The next thing Alex saw were headlights coming their way and the deer running. He felt the car swerve, Kasey jerking the wheel with another yell. The world went white, then black with a bang, an airbag smacking him across the face. The last thing he heard was Kasey pleading with him to wake up before his eyes drifted closed.

Christmas Eve, 2006
âWell, well, well, what have we here? An Alex OâHara, cooking?â
Alex rolled his eyes at Natalie before turning back to the root vegetables he was cutting for Christmas dinner. âOh, ha, ha, like youâre any better.â
âI donât need to be better,â she said, walking up behind him and planting a kiss on his cheek. âI am a guest. I donât have to do anything.â
Alex hummed, placing his knife down and turning to wrap his arms around Natalieâs waist. He kissed her firmly. âI love you.â
Her smile was everything. âI love you, too.â
âIâm so happy you came home with me for Christmas.â
âI am, too, baby.â Natalie stood on her toes to kiss him again. âYour brother is sweet. And so are his boys.â
Alex rolled his eyes hard. Finnâs partners, Logan and Leo, had also joined them for the holidays. âThey are disgusting.â
Natalie flicked the side of his head. âI think theyâre cute.âÂ
âYouâre cute.â
âWell, I know that.â Natalie carded her fingers through Alexâs hair. She looked contemplative. âHowâs Leo?â
âWhat do you mean, âhowâs Leoâ?â
âI mean⌠I donât know, his parentâs flight got seriously delayed because of the snow here. Is he worried or anything?â
âI donât think so,â Alex said, patting a rhythm on her hips. âThey get in the day after Christmas, so theyâll still be here for New Years.â He thought for a minute, then laughed. âI think Leoâs more irritated about the cold.â
âHe is a southern boy. Not that Tremblay, though, my goodness. Born and raised a lumberjack in the deep Canadian wilderness.â
Alex rolled his eyes. âNo he was not.â
âYeah huh, he was. Until they bought the farm.â
Alex narrowed his eyes. âShould I be concerned that youâre so obsessed with Finnâs boyfriends?â
âNo,â Natalie laughed. âNo, itâs justâŚâ She shrugged. âI donât know, itâs just nice, that weâre all so happy. That weâre all family. Your parents are so wonderful, inviting everyone and keeping their home open.â
Alex had a sudden flashback to Christmases in high school and warm brown eyes looking up at him from where Kasey had been asleep on his floor.
Thank you.
For what?
For letting me crash your familyâs Christmas.
You are family, Kase.
âBaby?â
Alex blinked hard. âHm?â
Natalie was looking at him with furrowed eyebrows. âYou okay?â
He couldnât help but smile and kissed her forehead. âIâm so good, gorgeous.â
But her eyes were knowing. âKasey?â
Alex nodded and rubbed his thumb over the skin of her hip absentmindedly. âYeah.â
âHe didnât respond?â
Alex shook his head. âNo.â
Natalie knew all about his history with Kasey, and the accident. Heâd broken down on her when he told her how in love heâd been, guilt tearing its way through him. But sheâd sat there, beautiful and understanding, and suggested he invited Kasey for Christmas Eve, just like heâd done when they were younger. Alex was grateful to her in ways he simply could not put into words.
Now she was standing in front of him, the same understanding written across her face, and gorgeous beyond his wildest dreams. She stood on her toes to cup his face and kiss him slowly. âHeâll come, Alexander.â
Alex pressed their foreheads together and nodded. âI love you.â
He felt her smile into his neck. âI love you, too.â
Alex kissed her forehead and went back to chopping his vegetables. There were footsteps sounding from down the hallway, and then Noelle Tremblay and Thomas Walker appeared in the kitchen, both in matching cable knit sweaters and complimentary earrings.
âJoyeux Noelle!â Thomas said in excited, badly pronounced French, smacking a kiss on Noelleâs cheek. âItâs this girlâs special day!â
Noelle just rolled her eyes, blushing. âIgnore him.â She opened her arms to give each Natalie and Alex a hug. âMerry Christmas.â
âMerry Christmas,â Alex said, squeezing her tightly. He clapped Thomas on the back. âHowâve you been?â
âMontrealâs sick, man,â Thomas said. âNew jobâs good, Noelleâs job is good, and my French is superb,â
Alex saw Noelle wince and bit back a snort. âWell, thatâs good.â
âSure is.â Thomas patted him on the back and began to head towards the living room. âNow, Leo asked me to beat Logan at cards, gotta knock him down a few pegs. So I bid you adieu.â
âCâmon,â Noelle said, tugging on Natalieâs sweater sleeve. âI brought some good wine, we can open it with Hayley.â
âOh, yes.â Natalie kissed Alexâs cheek. âIâll be in the living room, baby, okay? Come find me if you need help.â
âHave fun, Natalia.â
âThatâs not my name.â
Alex winked at her as she left, then turned back to his vegetables. He was just putting them in a bowl to season and oil them when there was a knock at the door, and an Iâll get it! from Finn. He couldnât see the front door from where he was, but Alex looked up anyway, brows furrowed. They werenât expecting anyone else. Loganâs family was all here, and assuming Leoâs parents didnât magically teleport from Louisiana, there wasnât anybody else who was meant to be there. UnlessâŚ
âAl!â Finnâs voice was urgent. âCâmere!â
Alex blanched. He felt his heart rate pick up and his fingers dropped the knife he was holding. It clattered onto the cutting board, but Alex barely paid it any attention before he was walking quickly down the hallway. Everyone was crowded by the front door, and Finn and Logan were looking at him with wide eyes. Leo had his arm wrapped tightly around Finnâs waist, eyes darting between all of them, putting the puzzle pieces together. Natalie and Sydney, one of Loganâs other sisters, were whispering to one another in hushed voices, and Sydney put her arm around Natalieâs shoulders to give her a hug. Alex swallowed and looked at the center of the crowd, where he could see his mother tearfully embracing someone a head taller than her. Alexâs stomach dropped when she stepped away to reveal warm brown eyes looking at him.
Kasey Winter hadnât changed much since Alex had last seen him. His hair was a bit shorter, coming down just below his chin. He looked broader, like heâd been working out, and there were less circles under his eyes. But he held himself in the same sheepish way he always had, maybe even more so when he met Alexâs gaze and gave him a small, awkward smile.Â
âHey, Al.â
Alex looked at him for a moment, taking Kasey in, before he felt like heâd been shocked back to life. He closed the distance between them quickly and threw his arms around Kaseyâs neck, tugging him down into a fierce hug. Kasey responded in kind, gripping Alex around the waist and ducking down to press his face into his shoulder. Alex stumbled back with the weight of him, but held on tightly to regain his footing.Â
âHi,â Alex whispered shakily. His eyes stung. âOh God, hi.â He released Kasey and stepped back to look at him, still gripping onto his biceps. âLook at you.â
Kaseyâs cheeks flushed in that way they did when he was particularly sheepish. He looked around the room and they reddened further. He cleared his throat and dropped his hands from where they were holding onto Alexâs forearms, looking around the room cautiously.Â
Alex shook his head, as though shaking himself awake. âOh, right, you donât know everybody. This is Leo-â
Alex was grateful for that sunshine smile. âHi.â
â-Thomas-â
Thomas extended his hand for Kasey to shake firmly. âPleasure, man.â
â-and Natalie.â Alex opened his arm to tuck Natalie into his side. âMy Natalie.â
âHi,â she said. Her arm was firm around Alexâs waist, holding him up. âItâs so nice to finally meet you.â
Kasey just smiled slightly and nodded. He looked Natalie up and down briefly. Alex knew what Kasey Winter looked like when he found someone attractive, and right now he was exposing all his tells: the way he bit the inside of his cheek, the way his eyelashes fluttered just slightly. It was how Alex knew Kasey had feelings for him all those years ago, when those beautiful eyes of his looked at Alex as though he was cradling him. And to see him look at Natalie the same way⌠Alex should have been jealous. Or annoyed. But Natalie was the most beautiful girl in the world, and Kasey was looking at her like he understood that.Â
Alex didnât realize his breathing had picked up until Natalie pressed a hand over his chest and rubbed gently. âDo you two wanna go talk?â she asked Alex softly, looking up at him through her eyelashes.
The most beautiful girl in the world. âYeah.â Alex cleared his throat and looked at Kasey. âYeah, Kase, you wannaâŚ?â
Kasey nodded, still obviously uneasy. âOkay.â
âCool.âÂ
Alex looked at Finn and he nodded, pressing his hands to Leoâs waist to guide him out of the room and to the kitchen, everyone following suit. Alexâs mother gave his bicep a squeeze. Noelle stayed behind briefly, her and Natalie communicating something silently, before nodding and following Thomas. Then it was just the three of them left.
âUm,â Alex started nervously. Natalie was still looking at him, eyebrows furrowed, and Alex was going to fall apart. âKase, you remember where my room is?â
âYeah, yeah, of course.â Kasey stumbled through taking his boots off and looked at them with wide eyes. He was jittery. âShould I meet you?â
âYeah, Iâll just be a minute.â Alex let his eyes follow Kasey out of the room and around the corner to the staircase. When heâd reached the first landing, Alex turned back to Natalie. His voice was choked when he spoke. âNatâŚâ
âSh, baby.â Natalie wrapped her arms firmly around his neck and tugged him down to her. âOh, baby, I got you.â
âI donât⌠heâsâŚâ
âI know.â She cupped his face and pressed their foreheads together. He felt her thumbs swipe under his eyes to wipe the wetness away. âItâs okay.â
âI love you,â Alex whispered desperately. He met her eyes; he needed her to understand. âI love you, I love you so much, Natalie, IâŚâ
âSh, I know. I know.â She kissed him softly. âI love you, too.â
âWill you tell Finn and my mom that Iâm okay? Please, theyâll beâŚâ
âOf course, of course.â She pressed her lips softly to his cheek. âYou can do this.â
Alex couldnât help it. He kissed her firmly again. âI love you.â
âI love you.â
Alex took a deep breath and squeezed her hands. She slipped away and through the doorway to the kitchen, where Noelle was immediately waiting to wrap an arm around her shoulders. She asked Natalie something briefly before retreating further into the room, long hair swinging behind them both.
Alex watched until she completely disappeared, then took a deep breath before going to climb up the staircase to the second floor of his parentâs house. His childhood bedroom was at the end of the hall, right across from Finnâs. He smiled at the drawings theyâd done of each other one afternoon, taped right at eye level. In his, Finn had drawn the two of them playing hockey at the pond behind their house. Alex studied it for a minute before taking a deep breath and knocking on the door, which was ajar an inch.
âKase?â
âYeah.â
Alex opened the door fully and closed it behind him. Kasey was standing by his desk, hands in his pockets, and though he had to resist the urge to touch things. Alex's eyes flashed to the photo of the two of them sitting around a campfire the summer after their senior year of high school. Kasey must have been looking at it.
Sure enough, Kasey jerked his head. âI didnât know you still had that.â
âOf course,â Alex said. He sat down on the edge of his bed, back straight. âIt was a good summer.â
Kasey let out a huff of a laugh. âGod, working at the diner wasâŚâ
âYeah.â Alex smiled. âCustomers loved us.â
âYou maybe. Youâre just soâŚâ Kasey waved his hand. âYou know. Everybody loves you.â
Alex cocked his head. âThey loved you, too.âÂ
âMaybe.â Kasey took a deep breath. âI got your message. Thanks for inviting me.â
âI wasnât sure.â Alexâs heart felt like it was going to beat out of his chest. âI didnât know if you were with your mom, orâŚâ
Kasey shook his head. âIâm not. I mean, I wasnât. I just moved back from Colorado. Sheâs⌠you know. Lonely. And needs her knees replaced, so sheâs not very mobile right now.â
âSo youâre here to help her.â
Kasey looked him up and down. âThere were more reasons to move back.â He sighed. âShe gave me your message, and I thought⌠you know, I hadnât seen you in a while.â
That was the understatement of the year. Alex tried to control his face from revealing too much. He was probably failing. âColorado?â
âYeah. I worked at a ski mountain for a year, then took up a carpentry internship. I left Vermont after⌠you know.â
The accident. âOh.â Alex patted the space next to him. âWell, Iâm happy to see you.â
âMe, too.â Kasey gingerly sat down. âFinn looks the same.â
That made Alex laugh. âHeâs still just as annoying as he was, too.â
Kaseyâs smile was wide and real. âYou love him.â
âI do.â Alex had to stop himself from playing with his cuticles. If Natalie were here, she would take his hands and kiss them. âHeâs got two boyfriends now.â
Kasey looked surprised. âReally?â
âYeah. Lo and him finally figured their shit out⌠well, mostly âcause of Leo. Who theyâre also dating. They met him at UVM.â
âWow.â Kasey thought for a moment. âI didnât think theyâd everâŚâ
âMe neither.â Alex smiled fondly. âThey were so stupid. But Leoâs so good to them, and helped them so much with it all. His parents are coming in a couple of days.â
âThatâs nice.â Kasey trailed off, looking out Alexâs bedroom window. He stood to get a better look at the view. âYou can see the Tremblayâs farm from here. Without all the leaves on the trees.â
Alex knew where this was going. His heart picked up again. âKaseyâŚâ
When Kasey turned around, his eyes were rimmed with tears. âAl.â
âHey.â Alex stood and pulled Kasey to him, wrapping his arms around his shoulders firmly. âItâs okay.â
âNo, itâs not, Iâm so sorry-â
âYou have nothing to be sorry for.â
âI do.â Kasey pulled back strongly, backed up against the window. âAlex, I crashed your car.â
âThere were deer.â
âI kissed you.â
âAnd I kissed you back.â
âI killed those people.â
âNo.âÂ
The word came out harsher than Alex had intended it to. His mind flashed to being in the hospital, a concussion and broken ribs, and the police there asking questions. His mother had been crying, Finn had been talking with an officer, and Kasey was nowhere to be found. Alex had asked for him for days, and all Finn had had to say was that he wasnât answering the phone, nor the door when he had gone to try and talk. Alex had felt like his heart had broken in two. Learning that the passengers in the car had run right into a buck and had died instantly had only added to the pain. And hearing Kasey say that it was his faultâŚ
âNo,â Alex repeated. He gripped Kasey firmly behind the head. âKasey Winter, you listen to me. You did not kill those people. They were going too fast on a windy road and hit two deer, one with large antlers, and they died. It wasnât you.â
âBut I was swerving all around the road from the passenger seat-â
âAnd if you hadnât swerved when you saw that fawn and that doe, I would be dead.â Alex couldnât help it, he ran a hand through Kaseyâs hair. âKase.â
Kasey had his eyes shut, probably against the memories. âI just⌠Iâm so sorry.â
âI know.âÂ
âNo, Al,â Kasey insisted. âIâm sorry. Iâm sorry I was so drunk that day, Iâm sorry I took the wheel, Iâm sorry I left.â
Alex felt the cracks running through his heart deepen. His grip on Kasey was still strong. âKaseyâŚâ
âIâm sorry I kissed you.âÂ
Kaseyâs eyes were pleading as they looked into Alexâs. Alex swallowed.Â
âIâm not,â he whispered shakily. âIâm sorry I tried to get you to talk when you didnât want to, Iâm sorry I didnât look harder for you-â When Kasey went to speak, Alex squeezed the back of his neck. â-but Iâm not sorry you kissed me.â
Kasey finally relaxed, as though relief had washed over him. He wrapped his arms around Alex again, not as tightly as before, but still just as strong. âI missed you.â
âI missed you so much.â Alex breathed out shakily. âSo much.â
Kasey lingered for a moment before pulling back entirely, his arms now crossed in front of him. Leaning against Alexâs bedroom window like that, smiling in that Kasey way of his, with his rugged plaid, jeans, and jacket on, he looked like something out of twenty year old Alexâs dreams. âSo,â Kasey said. âNatalie.â
Alex flushed with warmth and rubbed the back of his neck. âYeah. Nat, sheâs⌠sheâs great. The best, I just- I really love her.â
âGood.â Kasey nodded a few times. He was smiling, but Alex knew him better than anyone, and the corners of his eyes were strained. âIâd like to get to know her then.â
Alex didnât really know why, but he suddenly wished Natalie was there, pressed in between them. Kasey would love her, Alex just knew it. Natalie already loved him just from the stories sheâd heard about him. That insistent thought pressed on the back of his brain, and his mind suddenly went to Finn. To Finn and Logan and Leo, and he didnât know what was happening, but Alex knew it was important. He cupped the feeling to his chest and held it closely.
âYeah,â he said, fighting the urge to reach out and cup Kaseyâs jaw. He just looked so soft. âYeah, I think youâll really like her.â
October 2002
âKasey, open up!â Finn pounded on the Winterâs front door again. âKasey!â
âKasey!â Logan yelled, peering through a window of the small home. âOpen the door!â
Finn grunted and banged his fist on the door once more. âFuck.â
âHeâs not going to answer,â Logan said, walking up the front steps to stand beside Finn on the wooden porch.Â
âHeâs home.â
âFinnâŚâ
âWhy wonât he answer?â Finn turned and sat frustratedly down on the top step. âHeâs such a-â
âFinn.â
âSorry.â
âNon, câest bien.â Logan sat beside him, their shoulders and thighs touching. âItâs okay.â
âItâs justâŚâ Finn sighed, running a hand through his hair. âHeâs Alexâs best friend. And Alex is hurt, and heâs just notâŚâ
âKaseyâs hurt, too,â Logan pointed out.Â
âI know, but- how can he not be there?â Finn turned to Logan, who was looking at him almost sadly, those soft green eyes of his starkly contrasting to the orange leaves on the trees around them. âIâd never leave you like that.â
âJe sais,â Logan whispered. âI know.â
Finn suddenly realized how close they were sitting. Loganâs body radiated heat and Finn leaned ever so slightly into it. He tapped the toes of their boots together. âYouâre a good friend, Lo.â
Loganâs answering smile was everything. âYou are, too.â
September 2004
Finn flopped down beside Logan on the grass with a groan. âFuck me.â
Logan laughed and put his notebook down. âWhat happened?â
âProfessor Branston, who Iâm TAing for, just gave me twenty essays to help grade by Monday.â
Loganâs eyebrows furrowed. âBut itâs the third week of classes?â
âAnd heâd already given them an assignment!â Finn let out another groan and rested his forearm across his forehead. He looked up at Logan, who was watching him with amused eyes. âHow was French club?â
âGood, ouais.â Logan shrugged. âThe same people, mostly. There are a few new freshmen. One is also from Rimouski.â
âOh, sick. Anyone from anywhere else cool?â
Logan had to think for a minute, but then he clucked his tongue. âAh, ouais, there is someone from New Orleans. Leo.â Logan made a face. âHe speaks weird French.â
âHeâd probably say the same about you.â
Logan scoffed. âNon, I speak the best French.â
Finn snorted. âOui, oui, Canada!â he exclaimed in a poor imitation of Loganâs accent. âWe are za best! Quebec forever!â
âVa te faire,â Logan grumbled, giving him a shove. âI do not speak like that.â
âMm, a little bit you do.â Finn rolled over onto his stomach and folded his arms underneath his chin. âYour accent here sounds like it did when you first moved to Vermont junior year of high school, now that you have more Canadian friends.â
âNon, it doesnât,â Logan insisted, but he was blushing.Â
âI like it,â Finn said simply. âHey, thereâs a guy in Branston's class named Leo. Cool name, like the constellation. I started grading his essay today, heâs pretty good.â
âOuais?â Logan asked. If Finn didnât know any better, he would have said Logan was jealous.Â
Finn grinned. âOo-ways.â He nudged Loganâs shoulder. âCâmon, letâs go to the dining hall, Iâm starving.âÂ

April 2003
âNon, non, non!âÂ
Loganâs voice carried through the hallway from the common room. He was laughing, and someone was saying something back to him in French. Finnâs ears perked up from where he was coming back from changing after club hockey practice. Logan had finished showering before him, for once, and had gone to the common room to work on something for his French club. Maybe heâd run into someone from there. They were both still laughing and Finn's curiosity piqued. He rounded the corner and stopped in his tracks. âLeo?â
Leo, whoâd been smiling at Logan from where they were both sitting on the couch, looked up suddenly, eyebrows furrowing slightly. âFinn?â
âI- hi.â Finn gestured between Leo and Logan. âWait, youâreâŚâ
Leo looked amused. âLogan and I are in French club together.â
A light bulb went off in Finnâs head. âOh, youâre Leo from French club!â
Leoâs cheeks and button nose flushed. âLeo from French club?â
âYeah, Lo talks about you all the time!â
A look of mischief washed over Leoâs face and he looked at Logan, who was blushing. âOh does he now? All good things?â
Logan made a face at him and smacked his shoulder lightly. âFinn is being silly.â
âNo Iâm not-â
Logan sent him a glare and Finn had to hold back a snort. âHow do you two know each other?â
âI took Branstonâs class last semester,â Leo said. âAnd I am in Lamondâs class this semester, which Finn is also TAing, obviously.â
Loganâs eyes lit up. âYouâre the Leo? The one with the incredible writing?â
Finnâs eyes widened. It was Loganâs turn to be teasing, apparently.
Leo, on the other hand, looked very sheepish. âI mean, no, Iâm not that-â
âYeah you are,â Finn interrupted. If he and Logan were going to attempt to embarrass each other, Finn might as well be honest. âYou are a good writer. And apparently you speak strange French.â
Leo snorted and nudged Loganâs foot. âDonât worry, this one tells me that all the time.â
Finn grinned and sat down on Leoâs other side on the couch. They were both looking at him, their bodies turned to face him fully, and it did something funny to Finnâs chest. âIâm sure he does.â
November, 2003
âYouâre coming to Thanksgiving.â
Leo looked up from where he was doing his philosophy homework, blue eyes blinking slowly. âExcuse me.â
âI said, youâre coming to Thanksgiving. OâHara Thanksgiving.â Finn splayed his hands out on the library table. âYou arenât going to New Orleans, and campus is quiet because everybody else leaves. So, youâre coming to Thanksgiving. In Vermont. With me. My mother insists.âÂ
Logan snorted from beside Leo, doing what looked like his biology homework. âYou canât say no to Hayley, she wonât allow it.â Logan set his pencil down and looked up at Leo through long eyelashes. âIâll be there, too. Iâm going to my parentâs.â
Leoâs eyebrows raised in surprise. âYouâre not going to Rimouski?â
âMy grandparents are coming down this year.â
âThe Tremblays are also coming to my house,â Finn said. He pointed a finger at Leo. âAl has his Subaru here on campus, so heâs driving. Pack your stuff, Knut, and weâre hitting the road.â
Leo laughed. âNot for two more weeks!â
âWell, it takes me that long to pack.â
Leo just rolled his eyes playfully and turned back to his homework.
August 2004
âSenior year,â Alex said from Finnâs doorway. âShit, whereâd all that go, huh?â
âSays the man with his big fancy job.â
Alex rolled his eyes. âI work in bird of prey conservation.â
âWith your girlfriend,â Finn replied playfully. âNatalieâs cool, I like her. She shares momâs passion for tea.â
Alex shushed him, looking carefully over his shoulder. âQuiet, they might hear you and come running with a steaming mug.â
âThey canât hear us, theyâre in the kitchen.â Finn looked at his unzipped, but full, suitcase. âI think thatâs everything set for tomorrow.â
âYou driving you and Lo tomorrow?â
âYeah. Weâre meeting Le at the bus station here, too, heâs got an early flight from New Orleans into Boston, then taking the bus here, then we are all making the trip up.â
âHeâs flying with all his stuff?â
âNo, Lo stored some of it over the summer for him.â
âMm,â Alex hummed. He cocked his head. âYou think Leoâs gonna be okay after you and Logan graduate in the spring?â
Finn snorted. âLeo? Yeah, heâll be fine. Weâre not his only friends, by far, just like heâs not ours. Heâs just⌠weâreâŚâ Finn shrugged. âI donât know.â
Alex looked confused, but he didnât say anything, just nodded. Finn didnât quite know how to express what Logan and Leo were to him. Heâd loved Logan differently than any of his other friends since high school, and still did. Their college friends couldnât quite match the two of them; in fact, for a while, Finn didnât think anybody could. But then Leo Knut, in all of his tall, tanned, golden glory had walked into their lives their sophomore year and blown Finn off course. Not that he had been on course to begin with, but those same feelings heâd had for Logan for years he now also associated with Leo, and he didnât quite know what to do with that.
Finn realized that heâd spaced out and shook out of his reverie, then laughed awkwardly. âSorry.â
âAll good.â Alex was looking at him curiously still. âHey, is Logan still dating that girl?â
âCassie?â
âYeah.â
âOh, no.â Finn shook his head with a frown. âNo, theyâre not. Nothing bad, they just- I donât know, werenât meant to date.â He let out an amused breath. âPlus, weâre pretty sure her and our friend Percy are, like, meant to be, actually. So, you know- her and Lo, not gonna work.â
âAnd you donât have⌠you know, you donât have anyone to bring home?â
Finn furrowed his eyebrows. âWhatâs with the questions?â
Alex shook his head. âNothing, nothing, I just⌠I donât know, bringing Nat home, itâs just⌠youâve neverâŚâ
Finn swallowed. âThereâs never been anyone to bring home,â he said. His voice sounded shaky, even to his own ears. He snorted self-deprecatingly. âHey, thatâs not true, I bring Leo for Thanksgiving.â
Alex simply looked at him. He was silent for a moment before putting a hand on Finnâs shoulder. âHey.â
Finn felt his heart race. âHi.â
âFinn.â Alex took a deep breath. âYou can talk to me about stuff, you know? Okay? Even though Iâm not at college with you anymore.â
âI know.â In his mindâs eye, Leo and Loganâs faces flashed before Finn, the words on the tip of his tongue. But he stifled them and patted Alexâs shoulder back. âI know, I promise.â
âOkay.â Alex nodded towards his suitcase. âYou got enough flannel shirts?â
Finn rolled his eyes and shoved him. âShut up.â
âWhat? Câmon, English major, you gotta fit in with the crowd up there in Burly.â
âYeah, yeah, yeah.â
November, 2004
âI canât believe this is our last Thanksgiving all together in college,â Leo said, getting under the blanket next to Logan on one of the couches in the OâHaraâs den. âItâs the end of an era.â
âNon,â Logan insisted. He reached for some popcorn in the bowl Leo was holding. âNon, youâll still be invited.â
âItâs Finnâs house, I think he gets a say in that.â
âYeah!â Finn called from the other couch. âItâs my house.â He stuck his tongue out playfully at Leo. âAnd youâre always trouble, Knut, so count yourself lucky if youâre invited back.â
Leo stuck his tongue out back before turning to the hockey game on the TV. He popped a piece of popcorn into his mouth. âI canât believe the OâHaras are a Rangers family living in Bruins territory.â
âHey, my parents are from New York.â Finn pointed a finger at Logan. âAnd at least weâre not Canadiens fans.â
Logan rolled his eyes. âVa te faire. I am proud to be from Quebec.â
âYeah we noticed,â Leo said drily, then giggled with rosy cheeks when Logan glared at him. He said something to Logan in French, who responded with a mockingly biting tone, and they smiled at each other before shifting their focus back to the game.
Finn took a minute to look at their side profiles. Logan was all sharp lines- which really concealed a rather mushy inside, but he would never let anyone think that- whereas Leoâs features were soft. His blonde curls were longer now, almost as long as Loganâs dark waves, and the contrasting elements between the two of them caused Finn to take a sharp breath and turn back to the game.Â
***
An hour and forty-five minutes later, and the Rangers were entering the Thanksgiving holiday with a clean 2-0 win against the Montreal Canadiens. Logan had started the game passionately yelling at the television, but his eyes had gone droopy at the start of the third period. Leo had shared an exasperated look with Finn as they witnessed Logan wind down. Heâd eventually slouched against the couch, head dozing back on the cushion, but had wiggled so his head was now resting on Leoâs stomach. Leo, to his credit, hadnât moved a muscle, just smiled fondly when Logan let out a soft snore.Â
âHe awake?â Finn whispered.
Leo shook his head. His hand was splayed across Loganâs upper back- Finn didnât think he even knew he had placed it there. âNo, out like a light.â
âOh shit.â Finn laughed quietly. He stood, wrapping the blanket heâd been using around his shoulders, and went to kneel on the ground beside the other couch. âHeâs such a baby when you wake him up from a nap.â
Leo looked up at Finn and smiled. âYou remember that time in Louisiana? When you came to visit for spring break and he fell asleep on my boat?â
Finn remembered it clear as day. Logan and Leo had looked gorgeous in the golden hour, Leo with a rod in his hand, strong arm flexing as he fished over the side of the boat, and Logan spread out on his stomach on the bench at the front of the boat, passed out cold. Finn had wanted in that moment so vividly heâd had to grip the book between his fingers so tightly his nail made a mark in the back cover.
âI do remember,â he said to Leo, fighting the urge to brush some of those curls back from his forehead. âHe was a grumpy boy.â
âItâs just a front,â Leo said. He smiled down at Logan. âInside heâs just a big olâ softy.â
âMm.â Finn flickered his eyes over Leoâs face. âI meant what I said earlier, you know. Youâll still be invited here for Thanksgiving next year.â
Leoâs grin was delighted when he directed it at Finn. âOh yeah?â
âYeah. I mean, youâreâŚâ Finn felt his cheeks flush. âWell, my mom loves you, for one. And Loganâs sisters. And Al, and Nat, who loves to bake with you, and my dad likes playing cards with you and Lo, so just⌠I donât know, you should come back next year.â Finn took a deep breath and met Leoâs eyes. âI want you to come back next year.âÂ
Logan began to stir, maybe from the sound of their voices. His legs stretched from underneath the blanket and his cheek was squished into Leoâs sweatshirt when he blinked sleepily up at them. âQuoi?â
âHey, sleepyhead,â Leo whispered with a smile. âSweet dreams?â
Logan grunted and stretched again, reminding Finn of a dog being awoken from its slumber. âOuais. Did we win?â
âIf by we, you mean the Rangers,â Finn said. âThen yeah, we did.â
Logan groaned into Leoâs stomach. âNon.â
âOuais,â Leo laughed. He rested a hand on the back of Loganâs head, fingertips carding lightly through the strands. âThe Habs lost.â
Logan huffed grumpily once, then looked up at Leo with big eyes. âDĂŠsole, Le, Iâm sorry for falling asleep on you.â
âItâs alright,â Leo said with a sweet shrug. He was so cute Finn was going to combust. âYouâre warm.â
Logan looked pleased. He settled back down and turned his beautiful eyes to Finn. âLeo is coming for Thanksgiving next year?â
âWhat, were you eavesdropping?â Finn joked, then rested his elbow on the cushion near Leo to prop his head up. âAnd yeah, he is. Of course he is.â
âI think,â Logan mumbled, closing his eyes sleepily and snuggling into Leo. âI think we should spend Thanksgiving together forever.â
Finn felt his heartbeat stop for a moment. By the catch in Leoâs breath, he was just as surprised. They looked at each other, then at Logan, who was staring up at them nervously.Â
âWhatâŚâ Leo asked breathily. âThatâs⌠thatâs a long time.â
âMhm,â Logan hummed. His eyes darted between their faces for a second, then he shifted to straddle Leoâs thighs, pinning them beneath his gaze. âDo you not want to?â
Leoâs breathing was shaky. He raised trembling arms to cup around Loganâs waist, and Logan let him. âI do,â Leo whispered, so softly that Finn would have missed it if he wasnât listening. He turned to look at Finn. âWhat do you say?â
Finn looked between the two of them warily. He was standing on a precipice, that he knew, their friendship at stake as much as his heart that was beating wildly in his chest. Fear coursed through him for a moment, but then he looked at Leoâs hands, firm around Loganâs waist, and how Logan had laced his fingers over the backs of Leoâs tenderly. Leo was leaning closer now, his breathing almost in Finnâs ear, and Loganâs eyes were sure, steady, holding Finn together like they always did. Finn settled into the warmth and looked at each of them carefully.
âI think,â he started, then swallowed. He could do this. He was home. âI think I want to kiss you.â
Interpreted @lumosinloveâs Kasey and Natalieâ meet cute story, based on this post. Natalie is playing on tour, leaving town that night. Kasey has a job, sometimes gets called to play in the AHL, and accompanied his friend to a college concert. Read it on ao3 here.
ââŚand I know you wonât forget me babe,
Iâm worth a fistfight against the devil,
Try it sometimes,
Youâll only lose your mind, yeah.â
One last chord on her guitar, a final beat from her drummer, and the crowd cheered.
Natalie smiled as she caught her breath, throwing her head behind and letting the applause pervade her body.
âWhatâs up, Hartford!â
Loud cheers answered Natalie, and she theatrically bowed to the crowd of the bar. The fringes of her sleeves brushed against her legs, her guitar still vibrating against her core, becoming one. Her cheeks hurt from all the smiling, her heart pounding in her chest with the excitement of the crowd. In the chaos of a bar that only knew her for that one night, Natalie felt in the right place. Something untangled in her chest, the uncertainty and the bitterness of a broken heart leaving place to the moment.
âThank you, thank you. Weâll be back after a short break. Donât go anywhere, yeah?â
Natalie nodded back to her drummer and bassist, and they smiled back, certainly sharing the adrenaline boost. She took the guitar off her shoulders to gulp down the forgotten beer from earlier, and fixed her eyes on the crowd. Now, where did he goâŚ
Ah, there he was. The boy with blond hair and a Rolling Stoneâs t-shirt, that had entered the bar mid-concert and hadnât let Natalie out of his sight ever since. Maybe sheâd been keeping an eye on him, too. Right now, he was taking a sip of beer (watery, Natalie found it) as his friends talked all at onceâhe just listened. He looked like a listener, not a talker. Their eyes met, and she took in his blushing cheeks with pleasure. But he didnât look away. Not even when Natalie raised an eyebrow, in between curious and amused. His eyes didnât leave her.
Interesting.
Natalie looked away with a raised chin, curious, turning around and discuss the next songs with Jean and Therese, the players accompanying her on tour. She tried not to think of how his big eyes resembled her exâs and how theyâd been looking down at her during their last conversation. This dream is too big for you, Talie. When she looked back, the boyâs eyes were still on her. Different, she realized. His eyes were differentâshy, but challenging. Natalie needed change, and she needed freedom. And God, she was on her first tour. Who was she to deny herself the attention of a pretty blond. Well, good thing she was already wearing blush. She finished the beer in one gulp and switched the mic back on.
âFor the next song,â she called, âwould the tall handsome boy in The Rolling Stones t-shirt please come to the front of the crowd.â
The crowdâs response was immediate, locating and pushing the boy up front, his friends following him with huge grins as they howled his ears. The boy was blushing, smiling, bending his neck back to look at Natalie, towering over him from the stage. He must have been tall, and yet, Natalie thought heâd never look down at her. A violent kind of heat overthrew her, seeing him so close and soâŚat her feet. At her mercy.
âWhatâs your name, handsome?â
A half-chewed smile. Eyes always on her. âKasey. Kasey Winter.â
Natalie smiled, switching the electric guitar with her ukulele and sitting on the high stool. âWell, Mr. Winter, we donât know each other, but I hope itâs alright if I sing this next love song to you. You okay with that?â
The crowd clapped, someone whistled, people jostled Kasey. And Kasey Winter smiled, hands going his pockets a little in nervously, as he nodded. Eyes on her. âYeah, thatâs fine with me. As long as I can take you to dinner some time.â
Natalie smiled against the microphone.
âŚ
Kasey remained at the front the whole time. Natalie couldnât sit at the edge and whisper to him every romantic line she sang, but God, she wanted to. She really did, and didnât know what to make of it. A part of her was still mending the sharp edges of a broken trust, a million others told her it was a bad idea. She didnât know the guy. But one, small voice pushed her to be her true self and do what she did best: fuck around and find out. In the back of her mind, as the concert neared the end, a song about magnets and bars was already finding a rhythm of its own. A low beat, she envisioned. Kasey looked like, smiled like, watched her like a low, teasing bass beat.
Once the show was over, and the late hour had sobered the spirits, Natalie looked aroundâthe crew was dissembling their instruments, and the players had sealed with a nod the plan for tomorrow nightâs concert in the next town. After a quick goodbye with them, Natalie dared to glance at the empty bar. No, not empty.
He was sitting on a stool, drink in hand.
âSo, you really intend to keep your promise,â she smiled as she walked over to Kasey, keeping her chin up and trying not to make it sound as a question.
He turned, grinning as he stood up. âIâm a man of my word, Darcy.â
Natalie arched an eyebrow, amused by the shy, teasing, romantic boy. Low beat, low beat. Crescendo.
âWell, Mr. Winter, I doubt weâll find a restaurant open this late. But Iâm hungry and in an unknown city.â She smiled, taking his armâGod, the muscles. âLead the way.â
âŚ
They ended up in a churro shop at two a.m., the only place still open for their antics. Natalieâs combat boots were starting to hurt, and she noticed the badly suppressed yawns Kasey tried to hideâheâd mentioned practice earlier that day. But neither of them seemed to be willing to call it a night.
âSo, what is it like?â Kasey asked after they stopped laughing over Natalieâs misadventure on a tour involving too many martinis. âTouring around.â
Natalie dipped a churro in Nutella, much to Kaseyâs âjust sugar and cinnamon, thanksâ judging eyes. She thought about it as she took a bite, then smiled. âI mean, itâs fucking great. I still canât believe itâs happening. People seem to like what I do. Iâve been doing it for free for years, and now I actually get paid to do what I loveâitâs insane.â She shook her head, looking at the half burrito soaked in chocolate. She straightened her back and added, âBut Iâve worked hard for this.â
Kasey nodded, his head tilted in a puppy-like way that Natalie found cute. There was a focus in his eyes, a thirst for grasping. Impatience. She kicked his leg gently.
âHey. Youâll be the one working on the road one day. I know it.â
Hockey goalie, heâd saidâ Natalie could see it. He stood big, attentive. She could smell the shower heâd had before rushing to the concert. Iâm not even in college, heâd told her. I work at a bar, sometimes I get called to play. Working on getting a steady contract. Low beat, crescendo.
The shy, gentle giant in front of her had the nerve to blush and chew his cheek in a small smile. Broad shoulders shrugging. âDunno. Itâs a pretty selective industry. Hard to get noticed.â
Natalie hummed, remembering well the dread of waiting for a call. An email, a text. Any signs from the universe that she was doing something right. She watched Kasey throw their cartons in the trash and nod on their way out. She wondered how he looked on the ice. She got down her stool.
âYou know, a wise woman once told me that, if I had fun along the way, it would be worth it anyways.â
The raised eyebrow Kasey sent her, together with the last churro in his mouth, made her smile again.
âWhy do I have the impression youâre the wise woman, Darcy.â
âBecause I am a wise woman, Winter.â
Kasey shook his head, back to his chewed smiles, and opened the door for her. As soon as they were out, the cashier switched off the lights and locked the door. They shared a look and burst out laughing as they resumed their walk.
They walked with no destination until three. They passed by the fountain, closed shops, and the cathedral. Then Kasey escorted Natalie back to her van, hands in his pockets, and eyes bigger than the night. Pressed against the van door, Natalie watched the boy in front of her, feeling the crescendo in her chest.
Natalie couldnât help but wonderâif she didnât have to leave. If Kasey had been accompanying her to her flat instead of the cramped van she toured onto. If they had the time. The doubts of a career, of a life of distances and movement mixed with whatever those quiet, big eyes were doing to her into something inflammable.
And still, she dared. Dared to imagine a future of rushed texts, sent in the middle of band practice or before a game. After a concert or in a locker room. A lonely, complicated futureâtoo ambitious, thatâs what had drew Gabriel away. But Kasey had that shine in his eyes. They were both aiming high, too busy to be afraid of the fall.
The cold air of the night sent a chill up her arms, and she realised sheâd been staring at his neck the whole time.
To her surprise, he hadnât noticedâhe was staring at her lips.
âYou still havenât tried to kiss me, hockey boy.â
Kaseyâs breath hitched. His eyes moved on hers, and finally, a full and open smile appeared. âWell, Iâm a gentleman, rocker girl.â
Natalie straightened up, daring the distance. âGood thing Iâm not.â
The kiss started, indeed, very gentleman like. But it only took Natalie to get on her tiptoes for Kaseyâs hands to grab her waist and tilt his head. Oh, there it is. Natalie had watched the low flame of Kasey Winter all night, studying his calmness, and wanting to ignite it. There it is. Rock solo.
Natalie could feel the broad shoulders curving down to meet and engulf her, and the softness of Kaseyâs lips on hers. The brows furrowed in the focus of being gentle. When they parted, her heartbeat was in octaves, and she took a second, a hand finding Kaseyâs chestâthey were in sync. When she felt his forehead against hers, she smiled. Smile against smile against kiss against tongue.
âIâm so tempted to drag you inside my van,â she whispered to the empty parking lot.Â
âVery rockstar movie like,â he agreed, kissing her hair, her cheek.
âI want to,â she repeated on his lips, âBut I wonât.â Her hand found his checkâhis eyes were calm and smiling. As if he already knewâand agreed. âBecause I want a date with you, Winter. A proper date. I want to see you on the ice. I want you at more concerts. I already have a song in my mind about you, which, by the way, fuck you for taking so much space in my mind.â
âA wise womanâs mind.â A bare smile, again, soft and warm. Fresh snow about to get stepped on.
âYes,â she laughed, nose against nose. âIâve known you for five hours, who gave you permission.â
âNot gentleman of me at all,â he nodded, kissing her again.
Natalie couldnât stop herself from melting against him. In the back of her mind, she was rushing to find the last time sheâd felt this way with someone. So carefree, so out of control of her own emotions. Totally at Kaseyâs mercy. Vulnerable.
âI like your smile,â she breathed.
âI like your everything,â he blurted out, then looked down in panic. Natalie brought her hand to his cheek, and the open eyes that found her broke the last defence wall in her mind.
Retirement meant a lot of things he hadnât anticipated. It meant cleaning out his stall for the last time. It meant having time to finally transform the backyard into the garden heâd wanted for years. It meant kissing Alex goodbye for the Ragsâ Canadian road trip and Nat for a two-week trip to LA to shoot a series of music videos.
The first night, Kasey had luxuriated in the silence. He loved them, loved their life together and the family they found themselves in the middle of, half of the Lions roster now more than just teammates. But, heâd always been an introvert and the quiet was welcomeâŚ
At first.
The second night, heâd watched Alex play the Oilers and missed the way his stubble rubbed against Kaseyâs chest when he hid his face from the morning sun, not ready to leave the warm bed.
On the fourth, heâd facetimed with Natalie and missed the way her laugh sounded in person compared to through a phone. How she laughed with her whole body and throat.
And by the sixth night he was there in bed staring at the ceiling, maybe almost ready to admit he was lonely.
It was on day eight when he went to Wegmanâs hoping that chore lists and errands could distract him from how empty the house was right now.
She was in the parking lot, her dark fur blending in almost exactly with the dark asphalt. Her eyes were the color of copper pennies. The tiny kitten looked like she couldnât be much over six weeks old, and before he could second guess it, she was tucked in the front of his jacket her damp fur warming on the drive home.
âWhat do we call you, then?â He asked. She was no help, only offering him a bright inquiring glance before she curled up on his chest, tail wrapped around herself. She wasnât much bigger than a hockey puck like this, black fur making the resemblance complete.
Kasey loved irony.
Heâd spent years catching pucks, and it had taken less than four months of retirement for one to find and catch him instead.
âPuck.â He said, testing it out. Puck just purred.

thank you @noots-fic-fests for the propmts that helped me write a full story!! Eternal character credit to @lumosinlove and thank you so much to everyone who has read this and let me know you're enjoying it!
SO you pretty much have to read this on ao3, because the first part of this chapter is mostly texting and the formatting only works on ao3. But here's the first paragraph.

The sun was still shining, like it had been all summer, dappled through the trees. Finn ran, worked, moved around the house and property like a ship without an anchor, ate whatever was fastest. But when he ran, he thought of sitting across from a laughing Logan, past and present, and how any work was made easier in his presence. Heâd eat something, and think of Leo. Not only that Leo wouldâve made it better, but the soft look Leo got when tasting something, analysing and savouring. Finn wasnât savouring anything this week. He ate to be fed, worked to meet a deadline, waited until it was dark out to touch himself, and imagine.
He processed. Logan, his Logan, his college Logan, had shown up in his house? With Leo. His Leo, his summertime Leo.
o'darwin ballroom dance au thoughts for you all cause i was at competition all weekend and then had a 6 hour car ride home
(basic ballroom info can be found at the end under the cut)
the three of them are all partners together and just switch out depending on the style. nat and alex do rhythm and latin, nat and kasey do standard, and alex and kasey do smooth. but if 3-person ballroom was a thing they'd be excellent at it (a side note - competitions do fun dances after each style and our last one was group latin, so my 3 coaches did it together and gave me this idea cause it was adorable) (want to be clear coaches are platonic friends this specifically was just very o'darwin coded)
alex styles his hair very casually, basically just the way it falls normally but aggressively hair sprayed into place. kasey slicks his back into a neat bun. kasey does natâs hair for her, pulling it back in a twist back into a fancy ballroom bun with lil sparklies to accessorize
my former coachâs partner has a smooth jacket thatâs - well idk if itâs actually velvet cause thatâd be quite heavy for dance - but a velvet like texture and itâs subtly shiny under the lights and i imagine alex wearing that for smooth. paired with kasey, in something classic but maybe with some subtle detailing? rip
natâs latin dress is black with gold detailing. the skirt is a high to low style and itâs super cute and bouncy. her standard dress is long and i wanna go royal blue. maybe red. or green. some bright royal shade. itâs got this beautiful full skirt and she has ribbons on cuffs she attaches to her wrists for certain dances. the dress has silver gemstone detailing on the bodice
they stay in a hotel for competitions and share soft sleepy kisses in the elevator up on the way back, heavy bags hanging off their shoulders. alex insists on carrying natâs costumes for her (heâd carry her bag too but he doesnât have enough arms for that)
cheering each other on from the sidelines and the two dancing always smile at their third when they hear/spot them
social dancing and nat is laughing while kasey twirls her all around, alex watching from the side, falling more in love with each laugh and smile from the two of them
falling into bed with each other, all soft hands and quiet giggles. they have passionate and rougher times too but in my head oâdarwin are just so somft with each other. alex carefully taking natâs shirt off and kissing each inch of bare skin he uncovers. kasey standing behind her with gentle hands on her hips, nosing at her neck. alex and kasey taking turns fucking nat and itâs different with both but just as good. alex getting his mouth on kasey and reveling in the sounds he makes
nat steals alex's sweatpants constantly. they fit better than kasey's so she steals his sweatshirts instead. kasey and nat steal each other's hair elastics, one of them always has one on hand
the three of them aren't like all over each other at competition, looking at them you might not guess they were romantically together rather than just dance partners, but you can tell they have a connection with each other through their dancing and know each other well. when partners actually like and know each other it shows and makes it that much better to watch. but if you paid close enough attention (not sure why anyone would but) you'd be able to see the quick kisses and gentle intimate moments between the three of them between rounds
now i'd put them in open, so they wouldn't have to wake up at the crack of dawn like us poor syllabus dancers (rip me), but if they were partners back then:
bb college alex and kasey partnering together kasey's first year (i put alex maybe a year older), and falling for each other towards the end of the year semester. they're never together, not really, but they've kissed and had sex and are close despite the complication of whatever it is their feelings are. kasey transfers schools after his freshman year and they're both devastated but they can't do a whole lot about it. they promise to keep in touch, but it's hard
at his new school, kase meets and partners up with natalie who's a freshman and new to ballroom. he's so shy and awkward around her at first, but he's patient and helps her learn. soon they become good friends and kasey gets less awkward. kasey is terrified to let himself fall for her after falling for alex, but he can't help it; nat is just so bright and delightful, and he finds himself spending hours outside of practice with her, just enjoying each other's company. nat - i don't wanna say wears him down cause that implies she pressured him, it's more she makes her own feelings known, respects his boundaries, and lets kasey sort his own feelings out on his time. together, they eventually decide to start dating, after kasey allows nat to kiss him late one night, saying he just wants to know, but really he's just too scared to say it outright. natalie is the one who asks if he'll be her official boyfriend. he agrees
anyway. back to 5am wake up times. comp starts at 8am, doors open at 7, and if you're in the first few rounds like they would be, that's when you arrive, hair and makeup already mostly ready if you can. nat and kasey staying together for their first competition and it's the first night they've spent together. they're bleary-eyed and exhausted, still new to their relationship, but there's sleepy kisses and gentle touches as they help each other get ready
they compete at bronze and do quite well, especially for natalie's first ever comp. i made my dear newcomer partner dance up to bronze because i've really danced too long to be in newcomer still, and she did great. anyway. it's a smaller comp, only one day. they don't place in anything, but they advance past the first round in every dance they compete, which is still very good
it's a long day for them both, but a fun one. a lot of time spent at ballroom competitions is standing around waiting for results. so there's a lot of that. they sit with the rest of their team ofc. it's a good bonding exercise
i have more thoughts but this is long enough as is so i'll stop for now cause it's nearly 2am and i really need to be asleep. i meant for this to just be headcanons and now it's gaining a plot. ah well
apologies if these don't make sense, i was awake for 20 hours straight sunday and wrote half of them in the car. i've been recovering since. also today i took a 2hr nap at 7pm and now here we are nearing 2am
ballroom basics for those who are very lost
ballroom is split into four styles for competitions:
smooth: american waltz, am tango, am foxtrot, am v waltz
latin: intl cha cha, intl rumba, samba, jive, paso doble
rhythm: am cha cha, am rumba, east coast swing, mambo, bolero
in the international dances, you aren't allowed to separate from your partner. you stay in frame - hands clasped basically - the whole time. in american style, you are allowed to separate. there's other differences to some, but that's the major one. rumba, foxtrot, and tango are the ones that are most different.
collegiate competitions have two levels: syllabus and open
syllabus: there's a specific list of moves you are allowed to do at each level. the levels go newcomer, bronze, silver, gold.
open: you can basically do what you want. there are no specific guidelines to the steps you can do. within reason, i mean, you can't just start doing an entirely separate dance. this is when it gets really fun to watch. the levels go novice, pre-champ, champ.
some competitions will let you cross-register, which basically means you can compete at multiple levels. many also compete different styles at different levels, allowed at all competitions, because learning that many dances well is quite difficult and takes a lot of time.
after newcomer dances will start being paired. so if you compete one, you must compete the other. common ones at bronze are intl waltz/quickstep, am waltz/tango, and cha cha/rumba. those were all paired at my competition this past weekend. starting in gold, they'll put three or four dances paired. at open, all dances are paired. so for example, a standard event in all open levels would include intl waltz, tango, foxtrot, and quickstep. each couple would have to dance all four. then separately they would have a syllabus v waltz event, which is open to anyone.
though hosted and mostly attended by college teams, anyone is allowed to enter a collegiate competition. once you get to the higher levels, especially open, most dancers are not still college students. you can't get that good in four years, so if they are college-age they would've had to start beforehand. those who don't register with a team are generally just put in as unaffiliated. schools are registered under the school. coaches can register through the school they coach for as well, if they register together. my coaches have done both. this doesn't really make a difference. mostly just a way of organization more than anything. we still claim my former coach as our own despite her now living and working in a different state and coaching a different team with her partner. we don't like him. i digress.
i hope this helped anyone if you bothered to read it
