State Visit to New Zealand (Day 2): King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima visited the unique multi-sensory special exhibition, Quake City at Canterbury Museum. Quake City takes people on a journey through the personal stories of the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes, and helps to understand the science behind these events.Â
On September 4 2010, the South Island of New Zealand was struck by a magnitude 7.1 earthquake. Some damaging aftershocks followed the main event, the strongest of which was a magnitude 6.3 shock known as the Christchurch earthquake that occurred nearly six months later on 22 February 2011, which killed 185 people and injured several thousand. Their Majesties spoke to volunteers who helped to rebuild Christchurch after the earthquake.
