The last major high rise worked on by Cass Gilbert was New York Life Insurance headquarters located on 51 Madison Avenue, just northeast of Madison Square Park. I posted a blue hour image back in September of last year, but I really like the mysterious look the Gothic tower takes as the skies grow black. The 88 foot high octagonal gold tile element with its 25,000 22-carat gold baked tiles gilded in the same fashion as china and the 57 foot lantern also leafed with gold give the edifice a truly unique outline particularly from this distance. Bushwick a very grim crime strewn area when I was growing began to change when an individual named Joe Ficalora took initiative after the tragic death of his mother in 2011 from a brain tumor. Earlier in his life during his formative years in 1991, Joe’s father was murdered outside a local subway station but Ficalora took the tragedies of his life and took the crusade to revive Bushwick. The street art and graffiti are a testament to his perseverance and the many artists whose work now adorns the old industrial walls of Bushwick.
