Melissa: Maria! Are you there?
Maria: Of course I’m here, but where the hell are you? You leave one note and you think everything’s all good? The hell you playing at?
Melissa: I told you—
Maria: Yeah yeah, you ran away from all your problems to Windenburg. If you think they ain’t gonna return you the second the courts here give the word…
Melissa: No, I’m with some people here, they—
Maria: I don’t care what loophole your sorry ass thinks you’ve found! You gonna have to get back here before your court date or else—
Melissa: Or else what? Maria, if I go back they’re gonna sentence me to hard labour, you know it, I know it. Here at least I’ve got a chance.
Maria: You sound like a runaway teen. You have no chance in Windenburg! You’re gonna get sent back here either way. Stop running from your problems and come and face them head-on.
Melissa: Come on, you know I can’t.
Maria: You think this is gonna be any better once they’ve had to extradite you back home? No! Stop being irresponsible and come back home.
Melissa: Yeah look… I’m gonna have to call another time, I borrowed this phone and the person needs it back. Say hi to the kids for me! Bye!
Maria: Like hell I—
Melissa pulled the phone away from her ear and hit the disconnect button. She wasn’t sure what she’d expected, really. All she’d hoped for was to confirm to Maria that she was alright, but never coming back to San Myshuno. She’d achieved that, she guessed. It didn’t feel as satisfying as she’d thought it would.
