Selachii infraclass, round 3: Nursehound vs Pelagic Thresher Shark
Nursehound
Pelagic Thresher Shark
It is once again time for me to post the backlog of art I've spent an entire year sitting on instead of sharing. This first piece from 2024 was a little wedding gift for my brother and his wife. He's a doctor and she's studying to become a nurse, so I represented them as a doctorfish (Acanthurus chirurgus) and a nursehound shark (Scyliorhinus stellaris), respectively. Watercolor on hot press paper, 6 x 6 inches.
Daily fish fact #870
Nursehound!
Their leathery eggs, also called “mermaid’s purses,” have four curly tendrils evenly placed on each edge of the egg. A female shark will find patches of seaweed to lay her eggs, which the eggs then stick to and don’t drift off into open ocean!

🦈 Daily Shark Fact: 🦈
Larger Spotted Dogfish (aka the Nursehound) like to stay close to the sea floor, living in rocky areas with lots of algae. They lay their eggs amongst the algae and seaweed. The egg cases have curly tendrils that wrap around the seaweed to prevent the egg case from floating away.
