Not only is the government trying to decimate the film industry here, but theyâre screwing over out-of-province and graduate students, eliminating the Economic and Rural Development and Tourism Department, AND they sent off lay-off notices to 109 people in the government just before the budget was released.
Add to this the fact that theyâre offering RBC up to $22 million to build a call centre -Â sorry, financial centre -Â in Halifax (http://globalnews.ca/news/1878173/nova-scotia-offers-royal-bank-up-to-22m-to-come-to-halifax/). Â Lost your job? Â Well you can now work at a call centre! Â We all know how fun that is!
By axing the film credit by 75% theyâve almost guaranteed that anyone who works in film will lose their job. Â Those whoâve benefited - from actors to crew to post-production to catering to equipment renters - now find themselves with an uncertain future. Â The effects are real: This Hour Has 22 Minutes is gone. Films that were supposed to shoot here this summer are pulling out. Â Itâs 24 hours after the budget was announced and the jobs are already disappearing.
The final nail in the coffin is the fact that in 2013 the Liberals considered the film industry an important part of this provinceâs economy, and one of their election promises was that they wouldnât touch the Film Tax Credit.
And people wonder why we canât trust politicians.
