Today is National Physician Suicide Awareness Day. Unfortunately, the COVID pandemic has revealed the weaknesses in our systems. We depended on our individual strengths to save us. A reflection of our American culture, for so long, we grasped the light we created within ourselves to escape the darkness. And, for some reason, we frown upon those who harness the glow of others. Those who haven’t had to submit themselves to the same experience are unfamiliar with the demands schools, health systems, patients, and society place on those in the healthcare field and its learners. There is someone smarter, someone more experienced, someone more capable. You doubt yourself. The shadows that followed you before now lead the way. Some days, you lose yourself. We have lost too many providers and students. It is unsustainable to think that we can continue without changing. Yes, we must ensure that someone who will take care of others tomorrow is competent, but do we need to dangle them so, over the edge? Our hold on them is not as secure as we think. And so they fall. The system must grow. It must be held accountable. Those in power must learn to listen and to understand. Sometimes, we need rest. Sometimes, we need a helping hand to pull us from the water. Sometimes, we need to vent. They will never know until they ask, rather than making decisions based on research or the bottom line. For my doctor, I know I would want someone who truly cares about me. But who cares for the carer? When I look up in the night, I hope I see society standing up, like a lighthouse, guiding me home. #npsaday #mentalhealth #hope My father was a psychiatrist. And that’s his tie I’m wearing. #cultivateawe : Hope. September 17 is National Physician Suicide Awareness (NPSA) Day. Physician suicide is a tremendous issue in healthcare. The relative risk for suicide has been found to be 2.27 times greater among female doctors and 1.41 times higher among male doctors versus the general population. Each physician suicide is a devastating loss affecting everyone - family, friends, colleagues, and up to 1 million patients per year. It is both a very personal loss and a public health crisis. #repost • @cordmeded Did you know that in July 2020, the FCC declared 988 as a new number to connect to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline? While not yet active, this has been a long time in the works and we can't thank these organizations enough for finally recognizing mental health is more than a moment. #NPSADay https://www.instagram.com/p/CFP4_wjBBjT/?igshid=b71f0eqespgt
