picture repressed gay slovacek x "i wouldnt date a guy" bisexual nash in a situationship.
okay. slovacek, on a material level, understands that he likes dick. now would he call himself gay? even internally? absolutely not. it's what he hates most about himself; it doesn't fit the image he wants to portray. he wants to be the tough guy, the jailbird, the badass main character in all the movies. and the guy in the movies is never a fag. if he can't be that guy, the only thing to do is to make the other recruits think he's that guy. sure, he has flings. he keeps it to himself. but he can't stop himself from imagining a relationship. a real one. when he has feelings for a guy he tends to push them down completely and settle for longing looks. hope they don't notice. but nash, nash notices. and he likes him too. and that wasn't part of slovacek's plan.
nash is one of those guys who's only bisexual at parties. ok jk lol but that's what he tells himself. he's a rich kid and he has a lot of fun. he can make out with his friends when he's drunk and laugh about it when he's sober, it's not gay. he's even had a few "boyfriends", believe it or not. it's just teenage rebellion. (it's not.) the thing about being queer in the 90's was that you didn't see any actual queer shit on tv or in pop culture at all, and therefore you didn't have any gay relationships to look up to. all the relationships he's had with guys, nash couldn't see them as real, just casual little affairs he could pick up and put down when he wanted. so what, he could kiss girls, and he could kiss guys. it's not like he'd marry one or anything.
and together? theyre a fuckin mess lol. slovacek freaking out every time nash does something sweet or tender because he's scared of how much he wants it. nash trying to convince himself it's just sex, just kissing, just laughing and fun and looks from across the room, and he's surprised when slovacek won't let him walk away. a huge fight about what they are. they start making out in the middle of it but slovacek shoves him off because he's genuinely angry and genuinely fell for him. nash realizing too late that okay, maybe he would like to date a guy, for real.

just finished boots & i love novacek so much i cant shut up about them
from a one-sided rivalry to companions who look out for each other and genuinely make each other improve 🥹 one of my fav tropes
at the beginning, nash says hes only in competition with himself. but after being demoted from squad leader, losing to slovacek, he feels lost. he came here with a purpose and he messed up. slovacek, having won, should feel fulfilled and leave the whole thing behind. but he still competes with nash over everything, even subconsciously. he constantly seeks out fulfillment through beating nash, from knowing hes doing better. and when he loses, he should feel awful; instead, it makes him look forward to their next challenge.
then comes nash's diary reveal. slovacek teases him about it relentlessly, as if discovering the diary is some kind of one-up. he brings it up not just to torture nash, but to make himself feel better. but when he catches nash trying to quit boot camp, fuck up on purpose, he doesnt feel that good about it, not as much as he'd expect. the idea of nash choosing the "easy way out" feels like a hit to his pride. because, for him, being here was almost a matter of life or death. for nash, he could just leave when he wanted.
day comes when they're told that if nash quits, slovacek goes with him. this was the biggest turnaround for their relationship. before, it was just a rivalry between two trainees. now theyre responsible for each other, and slovacek goes to prison if nash quits. in a moment of vulnerability, a side slovacek doesnt show anyone, he begs nash not to mess up, not to quit. a part of it was about being selfish, about how he has nowhere else to go. nash was his only hope now.
but a deeper part of him hoped nash would care, because at the end of the day, it wasnt just a rivalry between them anymore. theyve been through too much together for nash to not care at all, not even a little. a part of him, a deeper more shameful part, wants nash to stay *for* him, to choose him.
nash might be reluctant at first, saying "how is that on me?" but hes a marine, hes responsible for those around him. maybe it wasnt personal to him, but when he doesnt quit, when he chooses to push through out of a sense of responsibility and honor, slovacek doesnt just feel gratitude. because in the back of his mind, he believes its more than that. its not just nash being honorable, not dragging down another trainee with him--to slovacek, its nash not wanting to drag *him* down. its nash choosing to care more about slovacek than himself.
and of course, on the outside, slovacek and nash both share this "every man for themselves" mindset. slovacek, putting himself first because he *needs* to make it out of boot camp. nash, because he has a cause bigger than himself. but when nash chooses to do this for slovacek, it changes him. doing this made him a better person--*slovacek* made him a better person. for once, he sees a cause right in front of him.
its true that nash came here for one reason only, but along the way, slovacek's petty rivalry became something more. over time, slovacek started meaning more to him. maybe not more than his original purpose, but more than he expected.
and when he wanted to quit, when he almost gave up, slovacek was the reason he didnt. maybe indirectly. because to him, joining the marines was supposed to just be about a better future. but in the end, he only made it through boot camp because of slovacek, whether he wants to admit it or not.
slovacek, the same. he wasnt good with feelings, but he was most vulnerable with nash. so when nash does this for him, as much as slovacek hated it, he let his walls down. in a softer way, he said thank you. somewhere along the road, this stopped being a rivalry for him too. this became a reason to keep trying for him too.
i forgor to do this last night because i was literally dozing off as i hit post on ao3 but chapter 6 is up :-)

Nash/Slovacek (Boots) | E | (6/?)
summary:
Desperate for more alone time with Slovacek after their night together, Isaiah invites him on a road trip.
here's a snippet:
Hooking up with Nash to "get it out of his system" is obviously not working. It's only making everything worse. Thank god he's brutally hungover today, or else he would've been on Nash before they even got out of bed this morning and he'd be an even bigger disaster than he already is. His dull headache and sore back aren't enough to keep those urges completely at bay, though, as was just demonstrated in the laundry room.
Stupid. Nick never learns.
But he swears he won't do it again. For real this time.
The door of the cottage swings open and Nash wanders in, a pile of clothes in his arms. He looks tired today, but somehow he's still so fucking cute. It just makes Nick want to drag him to bed and hold him close and squeeze the shit out of him. Instead, Nick watches as Nash makes his way over to the bed, then deposits the warm laundry into Nick's lap and gives him a guilty (adorable) pout.
Ah, shit. He's gonna do it again.
Characters - Isaiah Nash & Nicholas Slovacek (Boots)
Fic Type - Fluff oneshot (Nash x Slovacek)
Synopsis - Isaiah and Nick have their first study date together!
Content - Nash & Slovacek studying together; the two being a comedically dysfunctional duo; college AU; established romantic relationship
Note - This fic went through development hell; I had gone through about five other ideas until I eventually landed on this one. This is the first fic I've written in about a year and a half, which means it's probably gonna suck, so please bear with me.
Heads up! This fic contains a bit of swearing (because Slovacek lol).
Isaiah's bedroom floor was a mess of scattered books, papers, and pencils. In the center of the chaos sat Isaiah, cross-legged and deeply engrossed in a textbook. Off to the side, Nick sat with his back against the wall, legs spread out and staring blankly at the space next to his boyfriend's head. They'd been like this for almost an hour, and hardly a word had passed between them. Isaiah had somehow been reading that same textbook the whole time, while Nick had nothing to entertain himself with except for one small chip of paint in the wall. But he could only stare at that for so long before becoming bored out of his mind.
"Y'know, when you said we were goin' on a date, I didn't think you meant this."
His boyfriend finally looked up from the textbook for the first time since he opened it. "Sorry, did you say something?"
Nick huffed. "We've been sittin' here for over an hour, when are we actually gonna do somethin'?"
"We are doing something. We're studying, remember?"
"You mean you're studyin'."
Isaiah gave him a questioning look. "You haven't been studying this whole time?"
"What's it look like?"
"Nick, midterms are next week," said Isaiah. "If anyone should be studying, it's you. Especially with the grade you have in math right now."
"Then why'd you say we were goin' on a date?" asked Nick.
"This is a date. It's a study date."
"Well, it's boring as hell. I haven't been able to make a single sex joke this whole time," said Nick, earning an eye roll.
"Not every moment together has to constantly be filled with the sounds of your voice," Isaiah said. "Sometimes, it's nice to have a little quiet time."
"You're tellin' me you don't miss the sound of my voice?" Nick asked, a cheeky grin spreading across his face.
"Like hell I do," he responded jokingly. Nick frowned. "Aw, why? Do you miss the sound of mine? How sweet," Isaiah teased, closing the textbook in his lap. "I will say this, you've actually been surprisingly quiet. I thought you'd be way more distracting."
"Me too, honestly."
"It's almost concerning that you weren't."
Nick scoffed. "I'll say. My handsome face should've been distracting enough, but you were too busy makin' eyes at that book instead. What have you been readin' for so long, anyway?"
Isaiah picked it up and showed the cover for his boyfriend to see. "Psychology Applied to Modern Life. I got the psych midterm first thing Monday morning."
"Good luck with that," Nick said sarcastically. He paused for a bit, then muttered, "I say that, but you wouldn't even need it."
Isaiah smiled at the compliment. They paused for a moment, then he asked, "Wanna quiz me?"
Nick's eyes lit up for a split second before he brushed it off with, "Oh finally, somethin' to do." He got off the wall and scooted closer to Isaiah, now sitting directly across from him. Isaiah opened the textbook, flipped to a page, and handed it to Nick, pointing to a section of practice questions. Nick read them over a bit, then looked up. "You ready?"
"Yep."
"First question---what is psychological adjustment?"
Isaiah took no time at all to answer. "The set of psychological processes that allow humans to adapt and cope with changes in everyday life."
"Right. Second---what's the principal advantage of experimental research?"
"Uh, it lets the researcher draw conclusions about cause and effect?" asked Isaiah.
Nick grinned. "Right again."
The two continued on, with Nick asking questions he didn't even understand and Isaiah getting every single one correct. After they finished, Nick closed the textbook and handed it back to him. "Nice work, Apollo."
"Thanks, Rocky. Now it's your turn."
"My turn?"
"Yep. If I remember your schedule right, you have your algebra exam first."
"I do?" Nick cocked his head to the side, thinking for a moment before widening his eyes. "Oh fuck, I do."
"And knowing you, you're not going to take extra time out of your day to study on your own." Isaiah nodded toward Nick's bag, which had been slumped against the wall, neglected since they first started. "Go get your textbook and we'll work through some problems together."
"I have a better idea," said Nick slyly. "I say we ditch this whole thing and go get some shakes at the diner. I heard they're buy one, get one fifty percent off for a limited time."
"Sure, we could do that---but only after we've finished studying," said Isaiah, causing Nick to groan. "Nice try, but if you don't want to flunk your midterm, you're gonna have to put in the work."
"Can't I just cheat? I've done it plenty of times before," he pleaded.
"No, not on my watch." Nick gave him a dirty look. "Looking at me like that's not gonna help you. You're not getting out of this."
"Fine." Nick got up, retrieved his textbook, and sat side-by-side, shoulder-to-shoulder with his boyfriend. He gave him the textbook and let him skim through the pages.
"Let's see here, is there anything in particular that you're struggling with? Anything that sticks out to you as something you might need to work on?"
"Everythin'."
"All right, off to a great start already," said Isaiah, flipping back to the table of contents. "Do you at least know what you guys are working on in class?"
"Uh... somethin' to do with square roots and fractions, I think."
"Okay, I think I found what we're looking for...page 60," he muttered, going to the correct page. "All right, this seems like a good place to start." He looked up at Nick. "First things first, what do you remember about this unit? If anything at all."
"Uh..." Nick's gaze trailed over to where the wall in front of him met the ceiling, as if that spot held every answer he was looking for. "You start out with fractions, and some of 'em have those square root things, and uh, you need to do the square roots first before doing anything else."
"Do the square roots?"
"Yeah, like make 'em smaller, I mean. Simplify 'em."
"Are you comfortable with doing that?" asked Isaiah.
"Sure, that shit's easy enough."
"All right, after that, what do you do?"
"Depends on what it says to do," Nick replied. "Multiply or divide."
"Good. Do you remember how to multiply fractions?" Nick shook his head. "What about dividing them?"
"Nope."
"I'll help you out then." Isaiah took out a scrap piece of paper and began explaining the process. Once he finished, he asked, "Does that make sense?" Nick nodded. Isaiah flipped the paper over and wrote on the back. "I'm gonna give you some practice problems to work on. If you have any questions, make sure you let me know."
"Got it." For the next few minutes, the only sound that could be heard was the furious scribbling of Nick's pencil. It was strange. Normally he wouldn't have been able to pay attention to anything school-related, let alone math. It just never came naturally to him, nor did it ever make much sense. But the way Isaiah explained everything, the solutions to the problems became a whole lot clearer. It was like a switch had been flipped, though he wasn't sure whether it was due to the explanation itself or if it were just because his boyfriend was the one helping him. Either way, he was feeling a hell of a lot better going through these equations, and they'd only been working on them for a short time.
Once he was finished, he put his pencil down. Isaiah, who'd been patiently waiting, looked over. "Ready for review?"
"Yep."
For a few quiet moments, he studied the paper. Anticipation welled up in Nick's chest. Why did he care all of a sudden? He'd never been antsy to figure out how he'd done on a problem set, mainly because most of the time, he already knew the answer. But right now, he couldn't help but pray that he did at least halfway decent.
All of that anxiety melted away as soon as Isaiah spoke. "Wow, Nick, you did a great job!" he exclaimed with a smile. "There's a mistake or two on one of them, but overall, you did pretty well." He handed the paper back over to Nick, who was now grinning ear-to-ear.
"Well, will you look at that," he said. "I'm not that stupid after all."
"You're not stupid, period." Isaiah cupped Nick's cheek in his hand and gave him a kiss on the bridge of his nose, right where his scar was. "All you really needed to do was focus. Once you did that, the rest seemed to come easily to you. How did you feel about those?"
"Not too shabby," Nick responded with a smile---not one of those shit-eating grins he normally gave, but a warm, genuine smile that only a few special people were able to see. "Thanks, Apollo."
"Don't mention it, Rocky."
The two of them leaned close and kissed each other. Isaiah's hand moved to the back of Nick's head, and Nick wrapped both of his arms around Isaiah's torso. When they pulled away, Nick's eyes glittered with delight. "Does this mean we can go get those shakes now?"
Isaiah chuckled. "Don't get too excited, we've only just begun. We still have a few more sections to go before you're anywhere near ready to call it a day."
Nick rolled his eyes and sighed. "Fine," he agreed with contempt. But deep down, he really didn't mind. Suddenly, the thought of studying didn't seem so bad, especially if he had Isaiah there to do it with him. The milkshakes could wait. For now, at least.

summary:
Desperate for more alone time with Slovacek after their night together, Isaiah invites him on a road trip.
here's a snippet:
They're close enough to touch should either of them reach out, but not so close that they're cuddling. Isaiah wants to curl up against Nick. Rest his head on his chest and feel his fingers trailing across his skin again, but he stays on his side of the bed, hands folded politely in his lap. They haven't touched at all today, aside from those few fleeting and unsexy moments in the bathroom earlier this afternoon. It's not like Isaiah doesn't want to. He does. Really badly. But they're both sober now, and for his own sanity, he needs Nick to be the one to make the first move this time.
Unfortunately for Isaiah's sanity, Nick does not make a move, and instead falls asleep fifteen minutes into the movie. He's propped up against the cushy headboard, head lolling to the side and mouth hanging open. Isaiah sighs and shakes his head. He climbs out of bed, grabs his wallet and an armful of their dirty laundry, and makes his way over to the main lobby. Might as well be productive with his alone time instead of sitting here, staring at Nick while he sleeps. Plus, Isaiah can surprise him with some warm, clean clothes when he wakes up. Because that's a nice thing to do for your friend whose armpits you kind of want to lick for some reason.
