Today's Ecoregion:
Valdivian Temperate Forests (NT0404)
My Rating: āāāāāāāāāā 10/10, A+, 100%
If you're a fan of the cold and Nothofagus trees like I am, then this is the ecoregion for you!
I imagine this is what Antarctica looked like before it froze over.
Bonus points for Monito del Montes, which are actually more closely related to the Australian marsupials than the American ones which is really cool.
Nothofagus - Huilo Huilo
#2348 - Nothofagus cliffortioides - Mountain Beech
AKA Fagus cliffortioides, Fuscospora cliffortioides and in MÄori tawhai rauriki.
A species of Southern Beech endemic to New Zealand, widespread in mountainous areas at high elevations, but near the treeline it forms 'goblin forests' barely 2m tall. Lower on the slopes it easily reachs 20m.
Not the only Nothofagus species I saw on the trip - they're the dominant trees in most higher altitude forests.
Whakapapa Village, North Island Volcanic Plateau, New Zealand
Sendero por un bosque de Nothofagus, Parque Nacional Tierra del Fuego, Argentina, 2022.

āAurumā, lutruwita/Tasmania, 2019
Fagus, Tanglefoot, Deciduous Beech (Nothofagus gunnii, (Hook.f.) Oerst) is a tree of many names, but an identifying feature that supersedes them all ā itās Australiaās only cold-weather deciduous species.
Endemic to Tasmaniaās alpine country, they are found in just a few small pockets of the island. Every year, tourists come from the world over to experience āthe change,ā turning from heritage green to flaming oranges for around a week.
