It was late at night. Chase was tired. He was distant. Robert thinks something bad happened on his most recent Brave Brigade mission. That's the only reason why Chase would plop down bonelessly beside Robert, why he would start fiddling with the ends of the boy's hair like he could shake the secrets of the universe loose from it, why he would murmur more to himself than to Robert, "You're good, you know? The best of us. We work and struggle for it, but you… you just are." Chase didn't say anything else after that, and when he came back the next day, he admitted that he was too out of it to remember what'd he said, though he did apologize if he said something upsetting to Robert because clearly that would be the only reason the boy brought it up.
