Simon is suspicious of his mum's new boyfriend, immediately, but James Garrick takes it in stride. He never yells, doesn't drink more than a single beer that Simon ever sees, and takes his mum out on dates. Real ones, to the cinema and dinner and art shows and things.
At first, it seems wrong, but after six months, both Simon and Tommy realize that James isn't changing their mum. He's making space for the things she wants, things her sons had never gotten a chance to see and know about her. Begrudgingly, Simon starts to accept the guy enough not to hide every time he comes around.
And that's when the trouble starts, because James starts bringing around his son, Kyle. -
"You live like this?"
Kyle doesn't knock before striding into Simon's room and shutting the door behind himself. He drags his eyes over everything - Simon's singular poster, the secondhand furniture, his shelves of books and random rocks and stones and bones. Everything gets that judgmental little London pout that means he's unimpressed, as ever, with anything in Simon's life.
Simon grits his teeth and turns around in his desk chair. "The fuck're you doin' in 'ere? Get out."
Kyle snorts and takes a seat on Simon's lap. "They're watching some boring chick flick."
As usual, Simon's brain goes staticky, and he has to remind himself not to stare at Kyle's lips. It takes him a moment too long to say, "Go bother Tommy."
"He's boring, too." Kyle's fingers run through his hair, and he grins when Simon shivers. "What're you working on, then?"
"None of your bloody business."
"Fine. You wanna go for a smoke on the roof? Or," he leans in to Simon's ear. "We could hang out in here for a bit."
