“As debuts EPs go, this one is notable mainly for what came next: the quite magnificent Funeral. Many of the Arcade Fire elements are already there, the obscure but emotionally wrought lyrics and subject matter, Win’s strained falsetto and Regine’s moments of wide-eyed Bjork-like vocals. . It’s a generous EP with 7 tracks, some of which sound a little ‘thin’ and more like demos, and others which are interesting as the first display of recurrent themes, such as the chorus “A cage is a cage, is a cage, is a cage!” from I’m Sleeping in a Submarine; or tracks that reappear later reimagined and re-recorded, such as No Cars Go, whose grown-up version appears on Neon Bible. . As it happened, I bought this EP after Funeral was released as that made me an instant fan and I was keen to get my hands on anything else. It’s not as fully formed as their debut LP, so perhaps mainly of interest for mad fans and completists only, but it is a fascinating insight into the early beginnings of a band who were due to go stratospheric, both in terms of their commercial success and creative endeavours...” .
