This really worries me. Massachusetts lawmakers and Governor Maura Healey are rushing to pass some of the most invasive and unworkable online ID check legislation I’ve ever seen in the form of a “social media ban” for young people.1,2 As a Mass resident, parent of a teen, and longstanding hater of online ID checks, I’m taking this personally. But it’s not just personal. If a bill like this passes in MA, supposedly one of the most progressive states in the country, it could be game over for online anonymity.

We’re taking a stand in MA,3 because if we lose on ID checks here, we might lose everywhere. I’m hoping you can rush a donation to fund this crucial rapid response campaign.

DONATE TO STOP ID CHECKS

Here are just a few things these bills threaten to do:

Force everyone (not just kids) to upload a government ID or submit to a facial recognition scan to create a social media account or post online, even on educational sites like Wikipedia.

Allow unsupportive parents to lock queer and trans youth off the Internet, restricting access to life-saving community and information with zero recourse.

Expand the Trump admin’s surveillance capabilities, making it easier for them to persecute people organizing protests, monitoring ICE, and criticizing the administration.

There are much better ways to protect kids than spying on everyone. MA lawmakers could start with passing a comprehensive data privacy bill4 that would actually crack down on Big Tech abuses and make the Internet safer for everyone.

I’ve been working around the clock to get reporters asking critical questions, educate lawmakers who seem to lack a basic understanding of the tech (much less the law), and mobilize a coalition of local groups to speak out against ID checks. And we’ve already started moving the needle5— but this could move super fast. So we need to be faster.
